Off the "shelf" AR Whisper that works

I bought a YHM 7.62 suppressor to use specifically with a whisper subsonic but I don't have the weapon yet. I want a bolt gun, a AR carbine and a AR pistol in this caliber. I finally decided to do the AR first, actually because it seems the least costly way to go and be able to try out the suppressor. I bought a couple of new virgin receivers to use hoping to find and buy upper assemblies and finish the lowers myself. I have been reading about all of the problems associated with making them cycle reliably and am hoping to avoid all of that. So the big question is; is there a place to buy a 300 whisper or 300/221 AR15 upper receiver assembly either in pistol or carbine form that functions properly "out of the box". I have been reading this forum for awhile but stopped for awhile when there were some sort of problems going on, a virus or something. I have searched the forum for an answer to this question so I wouldn't ask a question that has been beat to death and haven't found anything specific. Still though, I apologize up front if I overlooked the answer and this is an old answered question. If it is please direct me to the threads I can read. Thank you very much!!

Your gonna love it......but a warning its adictive. I would go with the bolt gun 1st, starting with an Ar platform can be frustrating when you start playing with subsonics..Bolt guns you dont have to worry of cycling issues.......However I started with an AR and now that I got the bugs worked out I love the darn thing..

Did you build your AR from parts or buy an upper and make it work?

I built my lower that its on now but originally I had it put onto a bushmaster lower from my varminter. I decided I like to play with them more when I dont have to switch things around. So I bought two more lowers and built one in a carbine mode for 5.7x28mm and built an A2 style for my whisper and put my 5.56 back as a full length rifle. just made it easier logistically.

I had my upper built by Model 1 Sales. Haven't shot it yet, but will report back here just how much of an "off the shelf" shooter it is or how much tinkering it takes to make it run. Loads will be based on AA1680 data in the Sierra data sheet, with 220 SMKs, 220 Hornady round nose, and 15 Nosler Ballistic Tips for starters...

You mentioned wanting an AR, a pistol, and a bolt action in 300 Whisper. One thing to remember is that it may be difficult to find a load that will shoot well in all 3. The subsonic loads in the Whisper are very barrel length dependant and will shoot slower in a 16" barrel than in a 10.5" barrel. This is because of the very low powder charge which can cause issues when trying to load for multiple weapons. The bullet actually starts losing velocity after 12" of barrel.

From what I've read, Remington/AAC seems to be approaching this by making two barrel lengths, 9" and 16". The 9" doesn't get all the potential velocity out of the round while the 16" actually slows it down from its max. These two lengths put velocities in the same ballpark (subsonic) with the factory loads they intend to provide for the 300 Blackout. Which brings me to the point that 300 Blackout may be the "off the shelf" approach you are looking for.

A bolt gun or a Contender barrel is definitely going to be the easiest to get running properly. Once you have a bolt gun properly built it is just a matter of finding a load you like, you do not have to worry about cycling issues.

Right now there is no such thing as off the shelf when talking about the Whisper everything is custom. I would imagine shortly Remington/AAC will come out with a complete rifle ready to shoot that will work with their ammo. If you do get an AR upper you can drop on your lower and have it work with no issues go buy a lottery ticket because you are truly lucky.

I guess I should go buy a lottery ticket! I had to assemble it from parts myself but it has functioned flawlessly right off my workbench.

If I were you I would get a bolt action first, that way you don't deal with potential cycling issues and can jump immediately into the fun quietness. Develop your load and once you get sick of cycling the action yourself then move into the AR15 platform.

Thats what I did and don't regret it a single bit.

Did you have to do anything special to the parts you bought like redrilling or relocating the gas port? Were all of the parts you purchased from the same company? Thanks
