Interesting photos. I looked closely, but don't see any of the typical scribed or painted trials serial numbers on that bayonet. Makes me think it was one of the few extras made as back-ups, etc. Would look more photogenic as well...

Hello pwcosol
Photos are real, bayonet is also XM9. US Army was inspired from the AK47 and decided to test the new bayonet in 1985.

No question from the photos it is a bona-fide Phrobis XM9. My understanding is when Phrobis produced this bayonet for the 1986 trials, they had to deliver 55 examples to the U.S. Army (as did the other contenders). Phrobis made slightly more than that, but no one knows the exact number. The additional bayonets were likely produced as replacements for damaged/lost bayonets, metallurgical testing, etc. It appears each bayonet actually submitted for the trials had a serial number painted and/or scribed onto both bayonet & scabbard. This was probably done to keep track of the bayonets and identify a specific bayonet/scabbard which may have suffered a fault or failure during the trials process. Those without such a number were the remaining spares. My XM9 is such a bayonet as may be the one you pictured.

Old thread slight update.

In my research on my BuckMaster book, I have discovered that 55 XM9 # 29's set's were made however 50 were sent to US Military for the XM9 trial's and 5 were held back at PHROBIS for there own expermention and test's. If you own an unmarked one you account for the third XM9 #29 I know that exist from the 5 that were held back. I have a few exclusive pictures of the very first M9 bayonet design idea's that will be seen first in the next 3 month's...

Thanks to Rick MacDonald Head Machinest of Qual-A-Tec / the PHROBIS Company's and Harry Camphuysen VP of Qual -A- Tec and on th R & D team for all the PHROBIS Company's. I now have a TON's of PHROBIS Historical information with document's, and picture's to back up the never heard before story's that will be shared in my book.
