Newbie here - Ruger #1V in 25-06 w/Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14X44

Just found this forum today. I hope I can provide some meaningful banter. My Ruger #1V is my first quarterbore (XMAS gift from me to me :D ) and I'm just starting to wring it out. I handload so I will be kibitzing there too from time to time. My rig is pretty heavy, right at 11 pounds. So far it has performed better than I have and I really enjoy shooting it. If I can just find some suitable varmints here in FL I'll be happy. Are turtles and long-legged wading birds considered varmints?

Welcome and congrats on joining the quarter-06 club! I have considered buying a Ruger #1 many times and your rig sounds like a winner. I need to dig up my old loads from my 25-06 and post them but my Rem 700 loved Nosler BTs and H4831-SC powder.

I almost hate to sugget this link as I wrote the info on the following page almost 10-years ago and it has been on the web all that time...I think that it is still accurate but if not perhaps someone can toast me here:

I saw your article, that's how I got here. I just traced the attached links and ended up here.

With regards to handloading - I favor the Hodgdon Extreme powders. I will be using H4831SC, H1000 and maybe Retumbo. I also favor Speer, Nosler, and Sierra bullets.

It turns out the 25-06 is the smallest cartridge I handload. I also load for 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, and 45-70.

Let's see if posting a picture works.

25-06 barrel length

I am looking to buy my first quarter bore and I want the 25-06. Now since this will be a long range rifle I am wondering about barrel length. I am looking at 3 rifles at the moment. Ruger model 1, T/C Encore in either 24 or 26 inch, and the Tikka T-3 in 22.88 inch barrel. L am leaning towards a single shot but I am very pleased with the craftsman ship and accuracy of a friends 300 winmag Tikka T-3. What bothers me is the barrel length for a long range gun. Or is the quality of the Tikka fine enough that the shorter 22.88 barrel will not make a difference?
