where to get a .300-221 bolt action rifle to be exported

hi all,

i think it is hopeless for me to get but a whole gun to be exported to me, if i'm ever to own a whisper. no gunsmith here has a reamer or headspace gauge for it, so that leaves me with buying one and having it shipped oversees.

do you have any reccomendation for a .300 whisper / .300-221 rifle for me and where i can find one? my budget would be in the $1000-1500 for a rifle and dies.

The international shipping is what would stop most dealers. Check out the two web links below. Both companies produce a high end rifle and I don't know if that is what you are looking for but both can answer your questions regarding shipping and if they cannot build you the rifle you want then they should know who can. They both could supply you with a Sako contoured barrel but of course you need an action to put it on. Read the info on the sites to get the number to call for international orders. Good luck in your search.

You could order a reamer, barrel, Dies have them mailed to you then have a gunsmith put you a 300 whisper gun together.

thanks guys,

i was just worried that if i would buy a reamer and a headspace gauge, it would cost so much that it would be more economical to just buy a whole gun. also if i buy a barrel i need all the same permits.

i have sent emails to jdj and kyle@kylearmament asking for offers. i can arrange for a ffl within usa, so this would be just a domestic issue for the then one that could do this for me.

do you guys know where i could buy a .300-221 reamer and headspace gauge and how much it would cost? i would be willing to check that out

Hi,

I think your options are as follow:

- first, contact ssk industries, the inventor of the round, they can produce any gun for that caliber.
your cheapest option is to go with a contender barrel, you would probably have access to a cheap contender action in your country and a butt stock.

second option, have ssk build you a bolt action rifle. a bit more costly.

Reamer from pacidic tool and gage is arround $150 + go and no go gages in 221 fireball arround $60 for the two.
A barrel from Pac-nor with a 1 in 8 twist would cost you $260 unchambered.

You could also go with the same barrel prechambered for the 300 whisper and threaded for a savage rifle. that is another easy solution.

All the cost above are without shipping charges and taxe or custom duty.

This link is for the key that you should get from savage for setting up your new barrel on your action.

The savage option might be the best , especially if you have dodgy gunsmiths in your area.

Good luck.

Nick

thanks for this VERY informative reply d-mon!

i have contacted ssk on several occasions, and no matter how trivial i try to have the questions, jdj manages to always find an angle to it, where the answer is NO CANNOT DO!.

last email i asked him if he could build me a whisper, like for example rem 700, and a friend of mine would buy in in usa, and then send it to me.
his reply: wisper doesn't work on rem 700, i don't export.

i sent email to rwhart and they are happy to send me a barrel, and they are checking for a reamer and headspace gauge for me.
I think your options are as follow:

>your cheapest option is to go with a contender barrel, you would probably >have access to a cheap contender action in your country and a butt stock.

this is a good option, i'm going to search for a contender here, but i'm not very optimistic.

>Reamer from pacidic tool and gage is arround $150 + go and no
>go gages in 221 fireball arround $60 for the two.
i'm not quite sure what you mean, but i sent them an email asking if they had .300/221 reamer and headspace gauge and could send to me. waiting for an answer. i think .300/221 is better for me than the whisper since i have only .223 brass

>A barrel from Pac-nor with a 1 in 8 twist would cost you $260
>unchambered.
i'm going to send them email as well.

>You could also go with the same barrel prechambered for the 300 whisper >and threaded for a savage rifle. that is another easy solution.
this is a good point. i'm going to see if i find a savage 10 or 110

i have a very good gunsmith here in iceland which is a friend of mine. the problem is that he doesn't have the reamer or the headgauge.

one additional question. i have a sako l579 with a .243 barrel. would it make sense to perhaps just look at a .338 whisper instead, since i could use that action?

It is not really a problem to get a rifle exported from the US. Send me a PM or email at thayes65@gmail.com and I can help get you information on this. Be aware that you will pay for....

The rifle...
Export Certificate...about $150 US
Shipping to dealer to export...
Shipping to you...
Duty and Customs?

On a one firearm basis this gets very expensive....

thanks.

i've managed to locate a thompson contentder here in iceland. i'm negotiating with the owner.

when (and if) i manage to get it, i will look for a contenter barrel.

where should i look for the barrel, and what length should i go for?

the barrel is a "true" .300 whisper i assume. do you reccomend getting a .300 whisper die set or .300/221 dies (i cannot find any brass but .223 here)?

hopefully i can end with something like:

Match Grade Machine has made a few Contender barrels in 300/221. Verify the twist is 1:8 if you will be shooting subsonic. Some of the hunting barrels are still 1:10. The Contender is a great single shot pistol and makes a good hunting pistol in 300/221.

I have a SSK 300 Whisper and use only 223 brass with out any problems. Just check the neck wall thickness.
