Optic for .300 (subsonic to 250 yards)

So, I'm getting my Whisper built and it will have two barrels - a 16" one for everyday use and for supersonic bullets, and a 9" one for special occasions and for subsonic only.

I'm considering optics, and would like to get some suggestions from you all. Money isn't a huge factor - I believe in "you get what you pay for" when it comes to optics. I own mostly Zeiss Conquest scopes.

Now, would I be doing myself a dis-service if I got anything higher in mag than a 6x? I was considering either a 1-4x or a 1.8-5.5x38 (Zeiss makes one in the Conquest line).

Any other good quality scopes out there that would serve my purposes? I'm looking for something with a fast acquisition at low mag, good light gathering, and up to a 6x magnification for precisions shots out to 250 yards (about the max effective range of a .300 Whisper subsonic with my suppressor).

Thanks!

Have done a little searching and had an additional question:

Will the 3-9 22 LR Pride Fowler scope work for this application? Is the bullet drop of a .22LR similar out to 200 yards as a subsonic 220 grain .300?

the 220 gr smk should have a higher point of impact than the 22lr at 200m, at the condition that they are launch at the same speed and same angle (same zero at same distance here).
the 22lr bullet has a Balistic coefficient of arround 0.180, a 220smk is more like 0.500 or 0.600.

I have a leupold vari II 3x9x40 with turrets adjustments and a mildot reticle.

As I do not have enough clicks left over to play with the turrets, I am using the mildot reticle. Center crosshaire for 100m zero, and then each following bottom dot for the rest : 125m, 150m-165m, 190m and 200m.

Clicking is more accurate (on small game the size of rabbits), therefore I am going to change the inclination of my scope to be able to use the turrets.

I suggest that you mount your scope in burris ring with the plastic inserts as you can change inserts to maximise the potential of the turrets of your scope, specialy with 1" scope tube.

Unless you get a 30mm diametre body scope (leupold Long range, IOR, smchmidt and bender, nightforce...)

I hope it will help.

Nick

I like the idea of using the mildots as a holdover/BDC, though.

With 95 MOA adjustment, do you think I'd need a 20MOA base, or not?

Too bad anything smaller would require about $1500 - ugh.

Was considering a 4x Zeiss Conquest, but it has a 1" tube, a regular Z-plex reticle, and doesn't have a lot of adjustment for MOA.

I'm also considering this:

Leupold VX-II Rifle Scope 2-7x 33mm LR Duplex Reticle

This would be about 11 oz, allow me to get custom-made goodies (target turrets calibrated for the load, or even change out the reticle to one of the many Leupold custom reticles). Under $300 especially if I can find one used. Never owned a Leupold, but I assume the glass is good?

For subsonic use only look into the Pride Fowler rapidreticle. A subsonic 300-221 Fireball has nearly identical ballisitcs as a 22 LR.

Seriously? I mean, using a 220 grain SMK subsonic out of a 9" barrel, I'd simply be able to use this $380 Pride-Fowler scope and be pretty close dead-on nuts accurate to 200 yards using the hash-marks?

Wow - hmm, just how nice are the scopes, then? Optics, click repeatability, warranty, low-light performance, etc.?

Looks like a FFP reticle as well - me likey!

I put a few numbers through the balistic program and that seems to be true. I might get one when I have a bit of cash.
