My whisper is almost done. (pics)

Well, I'm finally nearing the completion of my 300 whisper.
Just got it back from having the shilen barrel cut to 16", having the 3 lug installed, and getting a duracoat job.

It came back and I installed it in the HS stock, and shot it a couple times with the trident 9. I will say i am a little disappointed in the noise level, but it is a 9mm can, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The same can on my G34 is really quiet, but on the whisper it's considerably louder. I would love to try it with a .30 can, but don't know anyone with one around here yet.

anyway, i haven't mounted the scope so obviously I don't have a range report yet, but hopefully soon. I am going to try and load some of the ramshot enforcer and we'll see how that goes. just got my chrono in the mail, so i can give you guys some good info once i get a scope on it.

That looks a lot like my 700VS in 223.

One way to reduce the noise is to use the fastest burning powder you can get away with while still getting the velocity you want and safe pressure levels. This reduces the pressure at the muzzle and gives the can less work to do.

Also there are things that slow down the speed of sound:

* higher elevations
* higher humidity
* higher ambient temperature

A load that approaches the transonic range will start getting much louder with each fps vs a load that is fully subsonic or supersonic.

Powder...that is what i'm trying to figure out. I've used H110 in the past, but stopped using it because of the temp sensitivity.

i just bought one pound of ramshot enforcer i was going to play with, but if there is something better please chime in.

looked at the VV N110 as well. what are you guys buying for the quietest (read fastest burning) most accurate powder? there is so many options for the whisper it's a little overwhelming.

I've read where people have had good results with varget, to h335, to h110 and vv n110, and on and on. it doesn't seem to me that there are a few powders that are widely used, but more a wide variety of powers.

I suggest that you try the faster powders as well. Since you are using a bolt gun, you do not have to worry about getting the action to cycle, so you have more powder burning speed options. The Accurate powders #9 and #5 or powders of similar speed should work well in a bolt gun. There are some loads listed on quarterbore.com (note the .com not .net). I will post some sub-sonic load data that I have later when I get to my computer. (I am writing this on my itouch).

I forgot to mention that the lighter the charge you use, the less gas will be produced to make a muzzle report in the first place. Usually this corresponds to the faster powders because of chamber pressure.

Sorry I don't have a specific powder to recommend. But VV powders have produced the most consistency for me.

Aim for a velocity of 1000 fps. 1050fps is getting very close to the transonic range which can be as low as 1089fps at sea level. For supersonic loads, you don't have to be concerned about the muzzle report so much because bullet flight noise dominates.

This is true even with 223 @ 3200fps.
