Barrels

OK, I have decided to go the bolt route instead of gas. I've bought a used Remington 700 barreled action in .223. Who is a good source for our barrels? I'm thinking 1:8 twist, stainless steel, and about 18" in length.

There is a member "spook" that can barrel that for you. The action will need to be sent wherever you have it done to be properly head spaced.

I have a douglas barrel. I think the reason people use them is because they make one that duplicates the factory reminton varmit contour so you do not have to modify your stock.

Douglas, Hart, Shilen, Pac-Nor all make good barrels. That is just to name a few. You will need to find a good smith with a 300 whisper reamer to put it together for you.

I've built a few using Pac-Nor barrels and they seem to be pretty good. I've also got a Lilja barrel blank I'm going to use on my SAKO and its a nice looking piece. Its a stainless blank and after building a few suppressed rifles with chrome-moly barrels I'm thinking stainless makes more sense. The suppressors tend to condense and blow back a lot of the water vapor from the powder gasses and if not cleaned immediately it can lead to rusty bores. Stainless will prevent a lot of damage from that and the cost is not much more so you must choose.

Wow, I started looking at barrels and I'm overwhelmed by ...of all things ...the contours. Can anyone give some suggestions here? I want the rifle to be relatively light, but I don't think something along the lines of a pencil barrel will be practical, especially since it will be threaded.
