Frangible M-160 108.5 Grain in whisper?

Anyone have any experience loading these in a whisper? I would think they would work well with something around h110. Any load data would be great.

Please explain I shoot Vmax bullets and varmint grenades through My Cans all the time.......am I being stupid??

I've gone through about a thousand of these so far. I built an 8 inch gun with a shortened pistol length gas tube in order to try and run these subsonic or so to shoot some local steel matches. Here's my experience, YMMV.

The good.
The gun runs great. Right now my load is either AA#9 or Lil Gun with about 12gr. of powder and it burns very clean.

The bad.
sometimes the bullets will break in two while making the trip to the chamber, sometimes they break into small pieces and wreak havoc upon lockup. I have noticed though that this happens more when it is cold and is less frequent in warmer weather. I recently shortened my OAL abit and it hasn't happened since then.

The very bad.
These things are soft. I don't know what they are made of but they leave alot of "material" in the bolt. I think that as they pass the gas port they get shaved a bit and that stuff finds its way into the bolt. After about a 120 rounds or so the bolt is almost impossible to move by hand. Upon disassembly the gas ring slot is filled with this stuff. So I end up cleaning this thing way more than I like. (I don't like to clean at all!)

Right now the great debate raging in my head is whether to just make this thing blowback as I'm not sure how to overcome the shaving bullet issue, other than frequent and rigorous cleaning which i abhor. Obviously I could ditch these bullets in favor of jacketed ones, but I tend to be a bit stubborn and will keep at something until I've exhausted either all options or money!

New guy here, but I have been shooting frangibles for a few years. I use them in .308, 30-06, 30-40, and 300 Whisper. My experience is that once velocities get over 2000fps, accuracy really falls off. In most guns, 1500-1700fps do the best. A load that gives suitable accuracy in one gun, won't always be best in another. Makes for cheaper shooting. At 225yd, with my Winchester HiWall in 30-40 Krag with tang sights, off a rest I can routinely hit a 8"x8" steel plate. I use Alliant 2400 in everything but my AR (AR shot better with H110).

16" M1S 300 Whatever AR upper: 14.0gr H110, 2.25" oal, Wolf .223 primer, formed GI brass 1.35-1.36", 1796fps, fine functioning. Accurate enough for plinking.

Notes for using frangibles in the 300 Whatever AR:

In the AR, they feed fine from a Beta C mag; can be used for full auto too.

Must inside debur the case neck so it doesn't scrape the bullet when being seated.

About once per 200-300rd, a bullet tip will break off when being chambered...go ahead and shoot the round with the tip broke off and you will generally still hit the target if not too far away. The broke off bullet part still in the case can't be removed via an inertia puller, as it is too light weight, so shoot it out.

Weighing the bullets so you shoot a group with bullets that all weigh the same did not improve my groups.

Selecting bullets with perfect tips did not improve the groups.

I need to clean my AR bolt, bolt cam pin, and bolt carrier every 300-400 rounds, otherwise they get more dirty than when shooting 5.56mm ammo, and the cam pin gets harder to remove.

I ordered some the other day from Hi-Tech because they are so cheap. After ordering 1500 220 gr Matchkings I had to do something to make myself feel better. I will give them a try in the next few weeks. Maybe I'll take them to work and have them penetrant inspected for cracks and try the good ones in the suppressor? You make a good point Artful. There is no sense shooting them subsonic, so I planned on going hi speed and trading the can for ear plugs anyway. A .30 caliber shotgun? My data will be with WCC820 which Hi-Tech is sold out of again. 5 kegs of it will last me though since I won't want to shoot my Matchkings after paying what I did, ouch!! I also wondered if these things were abrasive or caused fouling/deposits. I don't have any cheap barrels to practice on.

I got 1k of these bullets the other day. Loaded them with 20g of H110 at 2.2". I have not ran them over the chrono. But they were a little hot, and didnt group very well. I cut the charge down to 17g of 296 and they work good. Make a great plinking bullet. But I would not even try 100yards. I'll shoot some steel at 25yards and that is what they are really for. The military M-160 load is very light.... I think 1300fps. The 1/8 twist probably is not helping. I got 1000, so I'll see what powders work best. Will try 15gr 2400 next. step down so it just cycles the weapon.

I also loaded some in the 308, at lower end of the powder range. The accuracy was just plain BAD. I am sure they were going 2600fps or so. I am sure I need to drop that charge down to bar min, and see what I can get.

Anyone else tried this recently? I'm going to try them in my m1s whisper setup, supersonic. I've never used these before and plan to spend some time checking for weight variations to see if I can take one variable out of the accuracy question.

I'm looking to develop an inexpensive plinking load. Has anyone had any experience with these on pigs or other critters?

Any help would be appreciated.
