Which barrel for build?

Great site! I have decided to build a 300-221/300Fireball/300W. This is a 12" AR build on my SBR receiver. I have three options for a barrel and all cost about the same. I can get a Noveske from G&R. It will run $20 more than a barrel from Teppo Jutsu. My third option is about $20 cheaper and that is to buy a 300 Fireball barrel from M1S and have it shortened, rethreaded and recontoured. I know Noveske is quality and G&R is a good company. I know Marty ter Weeme puts out quality as well. I don't know about M1S but it's a shaw barrel and the shorten thread and recontour will be done by Adco if I go that route. I want to shoot this shorty suppressed with 125gr supersonic and with 200gr subsonic. What should I ask for as port location and size and which barrel should I get? Forgot to mention that all three have 1 in 8" twist. I'd like to avoid the adjustable gas port or adjustable gas tube if that is possible. Need help on this one!

Stay away from the Model-one barrels. There have been various problems reported with these barrels.

I have a Noveske barrel directly from Noveske. John Noveske is a good craftsman... Barrel shoots very well good choice!

I have only heard positive feed back on Teppo Jutsu. Marty ter Weeme is a good craftsman!

I got my first 300 Whisper barrel from Tony at Del-Ton. It was a Olympic arms barrel. It shoots pretty well also. I do not think that he has any Olympic barrels left.

I would go with a 16-inch 1:8 twist barrel with the gas port in the pistol position. That is what I have and all of my barrels shoot both super sonic and sub-sonic without having to mess with an adjustable gas block. You want the gas port to be about 0.073 to 0.075 inches in diameter

I have a M1S barrel/upper that I'm very pleased w/ that shoots sub 3/4" groups w/numerous loads both super & sub.
Paul @ M1S is very glad to help you if any issues do arise.
However I do not know his response to 12" barrels.
Mine is 16" & ported @ the carbine position & works great w/subs & supers & no adj valve.
Call him & ask his opinion if you like. 903-546-2087 or email him @ (I think) sales@model1sales.com

This is good to hear. More sources for barrels is a good thing. Could you give me some more information about your barrel? What is the gas port diameter? I am putting a 16 inch 1:8 twist barrel together with the gas port in the carbine position and would very much like to get it to shoot sub and super sonics with out having to mess with an adjustable gas block.

thanks

Thanks for the replies. Good to hear that the M1S barrels are doing well. I do think that I'll probably lean towards Teppo or Noveske because I think the pistol gas port sounds like a more reliable way of handling both sub and supersonic rounds. Besides it would take less time to order one of the others since I can get them already threaded for the YHM Phantom for the supresor. I may call M1S though and discuss this with them to be fair. Ah so many things to build, so little money left.

I'll find out & hopefully post tomorrow.

I use an A2 stock w/CAR buffer & A2 spring (I have a CAR spring & M1S's modified buffer but haven't seen need to use them yet).
It cycles very reliably w/all supers & subs & sometimes holds open on last shot (w/subs-always w/supers).
However when I shoot full power loads thru it the recoil isn't bad.
A little more than w/A2 buffer but you have to be "feeling" for it.
Paul says 100% reliability w/M1S modified 300-221 buffer & spring w/subsonics & will always hold bolt open on last shot but to not shoot full power loads.

My theory is to deer hunt w/125g supersonics (& no suppressor).
My gun cycles 100% w/a little more recoil.
When hogs/coyotes/bobcat come in, simply change to subsonic mag, attach suppressor, rack out super sonic load and shoot subs w/100% reliability.
If bolt doesn't hold open on last round I do not care as I think this package is a GREAT compromise.
I'll also try to post some targets tomorrow.

There are a lot of good options out there.
If you haven't bought yet, you should give M1S a chance.

I bought a 10.5 Noveske barrel a couple months ago. It's a great barrel, except for one thing, the diameter of the barrel at the gas block is .875" and not the standard .750".

Why is this an issue? Well I'm trying to work up some subsonic loads for 220gr and am having cycling issues. The gas port is .0875". I wish I could put an adjustable gas block on it so I can tune the gas system to the load, instead of the load to the gas system.

And I have looked at the adjustable gas tube, but the valve will not fit underneath my MGI QCB handguard.
