1 in 14 twist for 300 whisper

I found a barrel with a 14 twist and want to put it on my Striker (savage 516) pistol, I know 8 twist is best. Question is will it work with any bullet, if so which ones would be best. Thanks from a newbie

No, this will not work with any bullet as the twist rate is too slow. If you want to shoot subsonic loads and heavier bullets you will need a faster twist. I would not use anything other then 1:8.

Now, the twist you are looking at is even a little slower then most 300-Whispers for supersonic loads so it may not even shoot supersonic bullets all that accurately.

I would buy a different barrel! If yu must use it, I expect it will work besy with the lightest bullets you can load at the highest velocity possible. Out of a pistol barrel, that is a tough combo to get! TC barrels made for supersonic loads are a 1:10 twist to give you a starting point.

Hello,
I think on the contrary that 1 turn in 14" can be good with a supersonic whisper. You will probably be limited by bullets of no more than 150 gr flat base.
Just to illustrate my thought:
1 in 14" is the standard twist for 155 grain sierra bullets launched from a 308 win.
1 in 17 or 18 " is the rate used by the benchrest crowd in the 30br with 118gr to 125 gr bullets.
1 in 16" is the rate of the 30 M1 in the usm1 for 110 gr bullets.
You should get good performances with 110 grain to 125 gr.

And nothing stops you from having a second barrel with a 1 in 8" for heavy subsonic stuff.
