Newbie to this forum - say it quietly!
Hi all,
Just joined the forum, as I am interested in building a suppressed .300 Whisper on an AR15. Suppressers / moderators are legal (encouraged, even!!) in the UK. Centre-fire semi-autos are totally illegal, and have been for twenty years. Therefore, I'm considering a manually operated carbine. Any suggestions for optimum barrel length and twist with 220 - 250g bullets at sub-sonic velocity would be greatly appreciated!

Use 16" Rem 700
Thanks, Ranger Dave
A friend of mine has a leftie 700 in .243 for Roe and other small deer. The 700 is very popular over here as a basis for both target and deer shooting rifles.
However, if I was going to use a bolt action in .300 Whisper, I'd probably consider the CZ527 action - it's available in Fireball and other small .22 centrefires and I like the detachable magazine option. Of course, it can be done with the 700 but it's more complicated .... and expensive!
Despite centre-fire autos being illegal (we might start a revolution or something) the AR15 in manually operated format is still very popular with the Practical Rifle lads and is also gaining a specialist following for fox shooting, as we cannot now legally hunt foxes on horseback. (End of rant, snarl, grrrr!)

Hello Andy,
Welcome to the forum.
If you chose to go with the cz action, make sure you choose a 222 or 223 as a base instead of a 221 fireball. I am not sure, but there are different magazines lenght for each cartridge, and if you go with a 221 fireball, you might not have enough length to seat your matchking fare out enough.
I went with a 222 cz fox myself.
I higly recommend Border barrel if you are looking for a good tube in the uk with a 1in 8" twist.
Norman Clark might have a reamer.
AR-15 base should work quite well also, + you won't have all the trouble of the gaz port as most of the members of this forum, as you are going manualy operated.

D mon,
Appreciated your comments on 527 mag length! I must admit, I'd completely forgotten. Interesting about the magazines, I thought that they just blocked them for the shorter cases. But then I remembered looking at a .223 and I think that the mag was marked .222/.223 so, the Hornet and Fireball must have there own dedicated magazines.
I hear good things about Border Barrels. I used to know a semi-professional stalker who was very keen on their barrels - I think that he'd had a 6.5 Swedish re-barrelled by them and was very satisfied. 1 in 8 does seem the way to go - I'll be using 220 - 240g projectiles. Still got to decide on which moderator to use.
I DO ilke the look of the AR15 though. So I'll start by pricing up that option. Yep, not having to worry about the gas port is the one 'advantage' of the semi-auto ban!
Rgds

Hello Andy,
Regarding the can, I do not think that the reflex type of supressor is best suited for your projetc. That can is definitly very good for supersonic calibers.Peter Jackson import them as well as the BR reflex, maybe his opinion might be different and better?
However I think that the Jet Ultra is the way to go (I hope I have the name right here). They fit at the end of your barrel and extend further past the muzzle than a Reflex, and are much more efficient for subsonics. And you can go with a barrel as short as 12" if lenght is a problem.
One thing to remember, It is not always easy to reach the 1700f-lbs of energy required by the law in UK with that cartridge.
