There is something that I never understood about the riveted pommell USMC scabbard.
There is one picture in the Brett's book, showing one of these scabbard made by buck.
It is quite strange, with only two loops and a completly different web attachement.
Going by memory, in the picture shown in the above book the scabbard has a kind of "decal" (sorry, don't know the english word for it) on the front, and the caption says something about "simulate checkering".
From the picture, I would say this "decal" was very similar to the "sand paper", if you know what I mean.
