A rifle and pistol has no maximum barrel length. It would be quite a pistol if you were to build a T/C Contender pistol as an example with a 30-inch barrel but as long as it does not have a stock it would still be legal as a pistol. Rifles obviously are the same "no-maximum" length....

The issue with this case is the stock as a barrel under 16-inches with a stock for fireing off the shoulder is a Short Barreled Rifle and it would be subject to registration and a $200 tax stamp.
