Hi Rex,
you are very right about the small marks on the blade to test the hardness, but I was referring to the different "dots" you usually find on the pommell and the latch levers.
I create confusion as I used the word "dots" but, according to the manual (see below) the correct word should be indentation.
Take a look at the following picture, where I marked them

and here is M9 technical manual (note that they use the drawing of an M7 pommell )

It seems that the right release lever is supposed to be, actually, installed on the right side, as was the left on the left side.
