Rate of Twist

From what I can tell the 1:8 rate of twist is the most common for subsonic 300 Whisper loads shot through a can. But what is the best rate of twist if one wants to be able to shoot both subsonic loads with a can and supersonic loads without? I have read 1:10 would be an acceptible compromise, but is this true? The rifle is being built on a Remington 700.

If I was in the U.S. I'd just build myself a second rifle, but being in Sweden I don't have that luxury. :frown:

Any thoughts?

Twist

1-8 twist with out question! Will stabilise 240gr MK's at subsonic speeds as well as extremely good accuracy at supersonic with every thing from 125gr and up. There's a post in this forum with a CZ 223 conversion where they have used a super fast 1-6.5 twist again with excellent accuracy.

Hmmm, so a 1-10 is out of the question then?

It will limit your bullet weight to 220 grains. I have one in an 8 twist and one in a 10. You cant tell the difference untill you exeed 220 grain bullets. What brands of barrels do you have to choose from in Sweden?

I can order barrels from most US barrel makers as pretty much all of them have export permits. The way things look I will be primarily shooting without a can.

Hello Skullwork,
If you are looking for a european make of barrels you can try Lothar walther in Germany (they make 1in 8 twist and they can even prechamber and prethread the barrel for you, as they have the reamer in stock) or try www.border-barrels.com , That is where I got my whisper barrels from. And they are very well made.

d-mon,
I was actually going to buy a Walther barrel, but as they don't offer fluted barrels...

Here's a funny tidbit - I got my permit for the rifle today, and the official designation for 300 Whisper in Sweden is now (since mine apparently is the first) 7.62x38mm. Go figure... ;)
