Turret lathe Question

I wnt to find out the difference between a LH cutting tool and RH cutting tool. for the Balance turning tool. Why are the different. is it the direction of the machine cutting if so what is it?? Thanks for any help with this

The RH cuts toward the headstock.
The LH cuts toward the tailstock...Bob
