TC Contender and rifling twist rate???
I called up a custom barrel maker yesterday (I won't mention who for now) to order a Contender carbine length barrel in 300-221. I specified a 1/8 twist, and was told that they did not offer that twist rate for the Contender because of the chance of overpressuring the frame if super-sonic loads were to be used.
Does anyone have any thought on that? |
I have some thoughts, but none of them appropriate for a family forum.

There is no evidence that faster twist increases pressure in a significant way. Else it would have caused a problem when the military took the hotly-loaded M193 NATO ammo and changed from 1:14 to 1:12 to 1:7.
And if they were concerned they would just refuse to use minimum dimension chambers or headspace. |

I load and shoot the brass Hoser makes too. |
I sorta thought so also, but I can't FORCE the builder to make what I want, so I'll probably look elsewhere for my barrel.
I want the 1/8 twist so that I can work up really heavy cast bullet loads, and fireform my cases to use in my AR-15 (not that it's really necessary). Stinks because I really like this builder's products.:frown: |
He should just say he didnt want to mess with it. Sounds to me like he was blowing smoke up the arse...
