AR Whisper Denting Ejected Brass
 

My 300 Whisper AR dents the mouth of ejected brass. The brass deflector is taking a beating and the brass is actually leaving marks on it. The rifle is very consistent as all brass is dented. Is it possible to modify the ejector to slow the case down a little or change its direction so it doesn't smack the deflector?

Funny you should bring this up. The one and only time I took my new 10" barrel to the range, I had the same issue, only the dents were about halfway down the body of the brass. My brass deflector is taking a beating too. I'm used to my 20" AR in .223 set up for long range. It throws all brass in a neat little pile about 8 feet away at 4 o'clock. My 300 BLK throws the brass in a sweeping arc at varying distances. I'm thinking it's because it may be slightly over-gassed. I'm going to try different powders and see if it makes a difference.

You can trim a bit off the ejector spring to make the brass not fly as far. Go slow. No more than a half coil at a time.

My high power rifle brass just dribbles out of the gun and lands in a small pile 18-24 inches away.

All my other uppers fling the brass out, way out. That is good as I like reliability.

As long as the dent isnt a crease/cut, your fine to reload it and press on.

As Hoser said start by slowly trimming the ejector spring so the brass is not ejected as hard. You can also fine tune the ejector by adjusting the angle and shape of the face of the ejector.

Have you tried a carrier weight? Worked for me, my barrel is 16" with a pistol gas system.

I know it's not an "over gassing" issue because I can dial down my adjustable gas tube until the bolt won't lock back on an empty mag and the brass is still dented. I'll try taking a small amount off the ejector spring. Thanks for the help guys.

I would like for that brass catcher to work, but in my experience, it has been more trouble than it is worth. I've only used one on .223, and the shorter brass of the whisper may work better, but I had lots of problems getting it set up right. The brass likes to stay right at the lip where it's in the way instead of falling into the bag. I'll try mine again the next time I'm at the range. I trimmed half a coil off my ejector spring, so as soon as I get back out to the range, I'll report back how that is working.

I'm using a brass catcher but it bounces off the upper receiver's brass deflector before going into the bag.

The only brass catcher worth consideration is the 3Bucc. It works great.

However it never occured to me to be concerned about the brass deflector being hit by the brass. That is what it is for after all. It is like complaining the barrel gets copper in it after firing ammo.
