300 whisper/BLK bolt gun question
300 whisper/BLK bolt gun question......
Other then the Rem 700 and Savages, what other bolt rifles have you guys converted into the 300 whisper? I have an old savage/stevens 222 bolt gun but I dont think its worth the trouble. But may make a few trades to get one I can work with. |

Other actions are as follows. I also think they are better then the Remington.
Howa 1500/Weatherby Vargaurd CZ 527 Zastava Mini Mauser (Interarms, Remington 799) |
I went with the Cz527,, love my remys just couldnt find a left hand one.
Check out the M1 version, You can upgrade the trigger guard,, the original 5 round clips still works and is nice to have in your pocket for a reload. |
Has anyone tried the Ruger 77 for a Whisper/Blackout build?

300 build on Weatherby/Howa Action
TitleII,
Please share some of the specs on your Howa build. I have an itch to build a bolt whisper/blackout to go along with my AR, and just picked up a Weatherby Vanguard .223 to start things going. I'm thinking of a medium to medium/heavy countour, relatively short barrel to keep it as handy as possible with a can, 1 in 8" twist, etc. Would be a great sub-gun as well as a youth doe gun with supersonic loads. Trying to do this on a reasonable budget and thinking of using the hogue stock. This will be my first custom build, so any recommendations would be very helpful, and of course pics would make it that much better! Crawdaddy |
Mini Mauser Reminton 799's work well. I've done quite a number of them.
Unfortunately they are pretty hard to find now that remington quit importing them from Zastava. CZ527's work really well. I've done a few of those too. The only gripe is the mag which needs some mods to work. Once done they are reliable, accurate and nice to shoot. The single set trigger is fantastic. Sako L46 actions pop up now and then and work very well too. I don't think they are commercially available anymore but still something to look for. Frank |

The thing with a howa/weatherby action is that you have to cut a relief to get the barrel out and then switch your lathe over to metric to cut the threads, as spook said the other day when I was talking to him it is more than what most smiths want to do with a build. pic of howa. http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...kablackout.jpg |
Guys, thanks for the responses. I'm starting to get a sense of where I'm going.
TitleII - I like your setup. What stock are you going with? I'm looking at the Hogue - I like them and it seems to be the most inexpensive option. I read a good tip here or on another forum about filling the stock cavity with spray foam to take out the hollow sound. The factory synthetic (aka cheap plastic) stock that came with my vanguard action will be replaced asap. Great forum - appreciate everything you guys have shared here to help a newb like me. I have a weatherby/Howa action with a 1x8" 16" Schillen barrel .
I just yesterday fired the best 10 shot 100 yd group I have ever fired using 190 gr BTSP Hornady bullets. These thing are a lot of fun....Pics are posted in the Reloading forum. |

Well I have a Winchester M70 short action that I was building for my dad before he died and it has a shilen match 308 barrel. I had already chambered it and headspaced it for 308 and if I tried to cut it off the contour to rethread and chamber it would look like crap so I may just get another contoured blank and build a 300 Blk on it. The barrel is all rusted anyway from sitting in the white in my barn for the last few years in a box of stuff.:frown: And I looked tonight....the guts to the bolt are missing...
All I had left to do was finish inletting it into this fancy grade birds eye maple stock. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...8/PICT0034.jpg |
WOW. You guys blow me away.
I8a, that's a darn nice looking rifle, and it shoots even better than it looks! Mike, I don't think I've ever seen a birdseye maple gunstock. That'd be a nice project to finish out in memory of your dad. Keep us posted on your progress with that one! Crawdaddy |
