I had hopes other guys would have feedback... I am going the flat black durakote finish for mine... I am not painting my first builds as I am planning to rebuild them with rivets and my current rivet builds are not quite done. I will be taking photos of the process when I do it and the photos will get posted here.

I know it sounds bad....but Dupli-color #1602 Black is about the best match for AKs that you will find. I've done about half of what I've built with it and it will stand up as well if not better than the high dollar finishes like Gun Kote or Dura Coat. A lot of times I'd rather just finish the reciever and trunions/rivets and leave the rest of the kit in it's original finish. The Dupli-color is an almost perfect match.
It comes in a spray can, sold almost everywhere, I get mine at Advance Auto parts. After you clean and degrease your parts well, paint it and bake it in an oven at 200-300 for an hour or two. The hotter and longer you bake it, the flatter the finish will be. So if your finish is a little too black or shiney to match the rest of your kit, just bake it a little hotter/longer and it will match. Try it, you will be impressed. Also it's not like Gun Kote where you need to strip the whole rifle to refinish or touch up. It's very forgiving. |
I was out shopping last night for the handle for my H-press and for the life of me I could not remember which paint you had suggested... I wrote it down and put it in my wallet this time!
I am curious if you paint after your entire build is done (at least barrel in and rear trunion)? Do you just mask off the parts you don't want painted and paint away...? I would assume that is the SOP but I figured I would ask. |
I've masked off parts that I don't want painted before. But most of the time after I assemble the rifle and test fire(work out any bugs) I just press the barrel pin back out and press the barrel back out and paint it. Then reassemble it. Sometimes I refinish the whole rifle.....It just depends

I was looking through the Brownels catalog, and the baked on epoxy finishes looked like just the ticket. If however Dupli-Color will do just as well, I'm all for it. I'm guessin' that metal flake or candy apple colors would be a bit tacky though. :D

On AK-47.net someone has a Krink that they had painted gold... it really looked pretty slick... Still, I am trying for more of an original look than not!

I like the idea of powder coating the exterior. I was planning on doing the same myself. Let me know how it works out. |
