458 socom silencer
 

Hi,
I m working on the supressor that will equip my 458socom rifle.
Do you know what should be the minimum diameter of my baffles holes?
I read somewhere that firIng large subsonic calibers,the whole rifle/can ,can move before the bullet exits the can and therefore connect with the baffleS.
What is your experince with that?

I normally use about .050"-.075" larger than the bullet diameter for baffles. I've not had any baffle strikes even when swinging the rifles for lead on moving targets. I don't think the movement of the rifle is going to affect the chance of baffle strikes unless you're in a big hurry or have a very very thin barrel. The whip of the barrel due to pressure is a real effect but shouldn't cause strikes.
One last thing to be aware of is that you don't need a friction fit of the bullet to the baffle. Holes with plenty of clearance won't affect the sound level enough to make it worth worrying about. Check some of the suppressor boards where guys are shooting .243 through .338 cans or 9mm through .45 cans. They still work great and in some cases have better sound level drops with the smaller bullets than with the ones they were made for.

Thats true I shoot 9mm out of my 45 Osprey can and 260 and 223 out of my 308 can.

I agree with the posts above. The only thing I might add is that as bore diameter increases, I have had better luck with adding length to the suppressor. As Spook and others have told me, "Volume is your friend."

Volume is definitely king. Especially when you are talking about big bore suppressors.

I made my baffles .500 and have had no issues. It is 2" OD and 12" long.

Fritzcat, What baffle design and how many did you use? Steel or aluminum?

you can usually get away making the first one out of steel and the rest aluminum.... an "M" to start out then switch over to "K's".

It has 6 steel M baffles and weighs 22 oz. I do not have a meter to test, it is a louder than my 300 whisper sub with a 9mm XL and 308 sub YHM 762. There is a big difference in bullet weight and the end results. The impact is still a lot louder than the shot.
