78 yard 308 subsonic deer kill
 

I have been trying to shoot a deer with a subsonic bullet on video for a while now. It's harder than it looks. The deer, the camera, and I don't always cooperate. Bow hunting with a rifle at 78 yards. I know of no other way to explain it.

The gun is a Savage 10 precision carbine threaded by TT.
The suppressor is a AAC Cyclone.
The load is 11.6 grs of Trail boss, Nosler brass, Win mag primer, and a 225 Outlaw State bullet. Average velocity is 1055 fps.

That is freaking awsome. Was that a lungshot? what scope do you have posted on your photo album with the calibrated reticle to 200?

It's a Pride Fowler .22LR scope. A subsonic bullet and a .22LR have very similar trajectory's. I used this scope for my Whisper until my CZ 452 came along. We do a lot of longer range shooting so I started putting dual use scopes on my guns. The shot hit in the front of the shoulder, past through a lung, the liver, and ended up hitting the back ham. I did not find the bullet.
The camera was directly above the gun between the scope and the suppressor. Notice that stopping the deer was the loudest sound.

I wish we could use silencers down here to hunt game animals. We can use them on non-game animals (pigs, yotes, ect...). Maybe that will change one day. It's pretty crazy .... I live on 650 acres and about the last 30 minutes of usable light during deer season - you can hear a gun shot about once every 30 seconds. BOOM - BOOOM - BOOOOM - it would be nice if we could silence some of them.

Excellent shooting by the way. Deer went down quick - seen a lot run further when hit by supersonics. Good clean kill.

Yeah, it's downright ridiculous where I hunt in Central Texas. 2 years ago on opening morning of deer season, I counted ~30 shots in the first 10 minutes of daylight. I say 2 years ago, because that is the last time I will hunt the opening morning of deer season on that land. It ruins the experience.

I'm going to be loading up for my 40XBT, also use a Cyclone after finished proofing starting w/10g of TB 175 BTHP I was wondering what the twist and length is on your Savage ?

The Pride Fowler I was referring to use to be on my Whisper AR. The scope on this gun is a Leupold Mark 4 4.5 x 14 LR/T. It has a custom reticle setup for 500 yards and turrets setup in 50 yard increments to 1000 yards. It also has 100 MOA of adjustment. All of this is calibrated for a 168 A-max @ 2660. I use the drop compensation in the scope as aiming points for the subs. @ 7 power the 400 yard dot = 100 yards. The 500 yard dot = 150 yards. It's not a perfect set up but I just got everything setup right before season.
The bullet. I had planned on shooting a 240 Outlaw. It was stable from 3 yards out to 100 yards and shot great out of my 10 twist. I went out to verify the drop at 125,150,175, and 200 and they started destabilizing at 150. So the 308 gets the 225 just a few days before season. The bullet hit in the crevice between the shoulder and the neck. It opened up and turned sideways as it went through the lung. It entered the liver backwards and exited at an angle. The bullet hit the back ham but did not enter. I found the bullet in the yard where I gutted the deer a couple of days later. Looks like the petals opened up and then folded back when it tumbled backwards. Here are some entry and exit pics of the liver

The bullet acts different in a 10 twist than in a 8 twist. The 10 twist gun tumbles much faster.

Good observation , I'm starting to think 8 overstabilizes the bullets and makes them more like little drills. Nice shooting :smile:

I agree that 1/8 may be over stabilising 220 - 240s (I know they do that to 210 Bergers) but I think too we need to look at barrel length as well. Wasn't the idea that the faster twist would also act to compensate for a shorter barrel needed for more efficient subsonic shooting?

Almost time for a debate on barrel length vs twist needed for subsonic 220 - 240 grain use...

2 Questions, are you using a digital camera? Does it have a threaded hole on the bottom?

If so on both then you can buy/build a mount to attach it to your gun/scope. The hole is a bopod adapter and should have no problem mounting something that light via a ring adapter or what not to your scope.

That would work, "1080p hd" subsonic death from above, you could be the first!

Although I dont think you would mess up the wifes camera through recoil, you could always make a spring shock asorber for it simply or make one for that fancly little hd camera in the pic above. I think thats a great idea aslong as you arent too shaky on the gun if you mount the camera to it. Or find a cameraman lol.

Check out the reaction of the deer in the first part of the video. In TN you can legally shoot three does a day. The first deer was shot just left of its nose. The bullet exited the neck just below the base of its skull and re entered the deer's back at the pelvis. It traveled about six inches through the ham before exiting a second time. So I shot the deer twice with the same bullet. The second deer was in the neck just below the head, leaving a hole the size of a quarter. The camera got some nice expulsion of material on both deer but a lot of the quality of the video is lost in download to photobucket.

3 does a day? What's the total season limit? That's crazy!

3 bucks all season. 114 does in rifle. 192 in bow. 42 in Muzzleloader. 3 does a day all season. We use to be able to shoot 7 bucks. It was reduced to 3. That was the right decision. Every year our deer population goes up. TWRA is trying to get a handle on the over population without spending money on the problem. We had a big kill two years ago (Black fly). It reduced the population by something like 20% in some areas. We still increased our deer numbers that year.

I really need to start filming my kills and get them online. I had one a few years ago of me shootig a button head with my 300/221 in the top of the head. Went through the neck partially and then exited almost halfway leaving a 50c piece size hole. What camera are you using now? Looks alot better in quality than the other.

I have used the same camera all year. It's a Sony handycam HDD. The sound and video is great on my computer. There's no pixelation and the sound is perfect. Photobucket really cuts the quality by at least 3/4

Ahh that explains it, its hd! My little ol 5mp sucks when I shoot a video so I was wondering if you had bought that neat little camera "contour" you had posted about before. What pills are you using in your 308? I was using a speer hotcor 200 gr I belive.

I'm using 225 Out Law bullets and a little Trail boss. I hunt with a mag full of supersonic and a sub in the pipe. Savage center feed mags are not user friendly when it comes to dropping a single round on top of the mag. That's why there is a lot of noise between shots.
