I presume you're talking about subsonic use.
The 220 grain is my choice for a 300wtf in a 2.28" magazine (AR-15) The 240 SMK is just too long The 240 grain is my choice for a 300wtf in a longer magazine. More mass and higher BC = more deliverd energy and less wind deflection. My favorite SMK however is the .338 300 grain. It's suitable for a 338 BR in a Rem SA subsonic. Also for a 338 Win Mag and 338 Norma Mag in a Rem 700 LA for a bit more velocity and range. |
majority of use is 220 smk due to cost factor.
240 would be for game use if I was inclined to do that instead of paper punching. |
I have found that the 220s are easier to work up a load with. The 240s are just as accurate, but much more finicky.
That and I had 3,000 of them left over from my Silhouette days. I still shoot IHMSA, just not that much. |
Given the new entries into the field I'd suggest adding the Hornady 225 HPBT, it's a good deal less expensive than the SMK 220
