how quiet can you get a whisper
 

Hi Guys
Iv been playing around down here in new zealand for the last year with my new 300/221. Have shot lots of deer and Tahr out to 300 meters no problem with supers, but arnt overly impressed with the sound levels with subs and my silencer. If I reduce the powder down, the sound levels drop off ok but so dose the projectils performance. Do you get much reduction in sound levels with full suppresion or are some suppresor brands supperior to others?

S'pose there are two key questions to come back at you with.

Velocity of your sub load?

Temperature you usually shoot it in?

And the follow up question is - what do you mean by loud? Bullet crack? or noise from the shooter's perspective?

I dont have an exacct speed to give but I have been experamenting with different loads and increaseing powder till it goes supper. The temperature here at the moment is around 14 celsius or 57 fah.
Im not shore how to measure the sound with any degree of accuracy but it seems a lot louder than what some of the youTube videos are. I have a .22 savage shorty which is amazingly quiet. I understand that the 30 cal is obviously going to be a lot louder than a .22 but am wondering how quiet can they be made, and what needs to be done to achieve the best results.

What sound moderator are you using at the moment?
I am using an MAE myself and another one produced in raglan (S and N). You can see then on trade me from time to time.

Mine is almost as quiet as my .22lr.

Powder selection goes a long way. Faster powders are quieter as more is burned before anything gets to the can.

Mine is almost as quiet as a suppressed 22 using Sierra 220s subsonic.

Thats very interesting, Im using H 11o and adi 2205, I will try out some experamints. What powder are you using?
I Have noticed the home made cast projectiles seem to go through a lot more
quieter.

I have shot a few wallabies near timaru, as well as hare and magpies with my whisper.
I am using Vitavuhori n110 , 9gr for subsonics(240smk) and 16,5for supersonic(125 noslerBT).
How fare past the muzzle does your silencer extend?

For subsonic shooting, the longer the silencer past the muzzle, the quieter they are. And overbarrel silencer do not give any advantage in subsonic shooting to cover the noise.Because most the powder is burnt before exiting the barrel.

Speed of sound at 14 deg Celsius is 1114 fps. Beg, borrow or steal a chrony and see what velocity you are getting. I found good accuracy at 1100 fps but aim for 1050fps as a rule of thumb.
