.458 Socom Dies

I bought Lee Dies so I could bell the case for large lead bullets. The seating die is not long enough to seat the long heavy bullets. Which seating dies are long enough for long bullets and long OAL?

I have the Lee dies too and felt the same way until I worked out how to adjust them.

Turn the seating stem part out to its fullest. Then start screwing the die into the press. Use the dies' position in the press as the primary adjustment.

Very fiddly, not user friendly - but at least the dies are cheap!

That is the way I have used them, then take the seating stem out to screw down to crimp the flare in. In this position, the stem adjuster is 1/8" above from starting thread.

Guys, not to get off subject but what did you use as barrel length?

Rikky Lee 05-20-2010 01:49 AM

Mine's 18 inches finished on a Rem 700 bolt action.

I'm not belling the case mouth for seating the 550 grain VLDs and I sometimes (when I remember!) do it for the 325s and 500 grainers.

I use a Rockchucker press and it took some fiddling, thinking and cursing to get the seater die right.

I am using 16" on a Savage. Thanks Spook for a good deal on the barrel.

7 Inch

Hello Allycat, have you got the suppressor for your shorty yet? I am wanting to find out effective a suppressor is with the .458 Socom Sub-Sonic.

Alleycat 05-20-2010 07:11 PM

I have the 458 suppressor and a AAC cyclone that I sent in on 02/26/2010 and went pending 04/05/2010. It's klling me. I orderd the 458 EI about eight months ago. Any day now

Hi, my barrel will be 14" when my gunsmith hurries up a bit for putting the rifle together.
