Are the model 1 sales 300 fireball uppers any good? What kind of accuracy should I expect from one? I will be shooting heavy sub sonic bullets. I will add a suppressor and may even SBR it. Any recommendations before I buy one?

Nope. They still sell them. I got one about two weeks ago. Haven't used it enough to have any real feedback for the OP.

I got the full rifle kit, so far it seems to work as expected. The trigger has about a 15lb pull though... Seriously, it has the heaviest trigger I have ever seen on an AR.

I am just basing these comments on what I have read on here and other boards but:

-the barrel accuracy can be hit or miss
-the carbine gas location is not ideal for subsonic
-the gas port size may need to be modified to cycle subsonic
-the throat length is long and you can't seat certain bullets to the lands without going over mag length

Any reason why you are not looking to just build your own from scratch?

Either way good luck with your build.

The post by Scalce reminded me of something that I read here, people seem to have good luck with AA1680 and Lil'Gun in both sub and super-sonic loads with the M1S AR.

Also, pay very close attention to this as you start to work up loads.

You may be a very experienced reloader and already know all of this, but someone else reading this thread may learn something.

On my M1S rifle I most definitely can get a bullet seated out far enough to get into the lands while still fitting in the mag. Did it, got the way over-pressured case to show for it...

A different bullet may not play out the same way, check your equipment and be careful.

Good point

It is not always the heavier bullets that can jam in the lands as the bullet profile is more important.

An example is my new barrel that can easily get 147 FMJs, 168/175 BTHPs, and 240 SMKs jammed into the lands at under mag length but the 208 Amax and 220 SMKs can be out to 2.6" and still not touch the throat.

I did get a chamber gauge cut from the guys who made my barrel which has been extremely useful in this regard.

You can always get a case that you know chambers and extracts correctly, cut 1 or 2 slits in the neck, clean up the burrs, and use that as a basic chamber measuring device.

Sart saving your pennies for a bolt gun to run the 458 Socom - world of difference!

I think I've decided on the 300 whisper. I think the 458 would just be to loud even suppressed. I want to build this on my AR and I want to use my existing mags as I have several, so that kinda limits me to the 300 or 458.

I've never done any real work on an AR so I don't know about changing barrels and such???? If its not that difficult, and if a bunch of speciality tools arn't needed, I would gladly build my own upper re-using the parts from my existing 223 upper. OR if anyone could recommend an AR smith that is reasonably priced I could go that route. Maybe send my upper off for a rebuild in 300 whisper or possibly 458 socom.

Somebody tell me the best way to go about this, as it is overwhelming me. My 223 upper is useless to me. I don't like nor need that caliber. A barrel and gas port swap is my preference.

Let me make your decision a little harder. We are just getting ready to release our 338 THUMPER. It uses 223 cases and mags. I hope to get some pictures up on our website in the next couple of days.
