Getting 300/221 fireball cases made
I have a friend, who will take my new or used 223 and run them into a Trim/form die giving me back 300 whisper raw formed cases trimmed to 1.423 plus or minus 2 thou - this gives me ability to trim to my chamber(as he does this for several of us including himself).
- he made the trim die the the same size as his chamber reamer was so they need to be sized with your reloading die before ready to load. But he does all this for me for like 4 cents apiece - I buy once fired 223 for $91 and drop it off and gvie him $40 for turning into 300 whisper brass. And I'm ready to run thru my sizer and trim to match my chamber - anyway he's willing to do the same for other people and I asked him if he could trim to the 1.355 trim length and make a new sizer/trim die thats down to ready to prime / powder and seat a bullet - he wants to find out if there's someone besides me who would buy his services before he cranks up the lathe to make a new die. So I told him I would ask around - What say you 300 whisper owners? Can I get anyone else interested in having him do this for them? |
sign me up!
I would happily pay $40 but as you say it needs to be from the new die to shorten it up a tad.

My time means a good deal to me. So, when I do get extra time I like to have a hobby that produces a tangible work product, work which I can take pride in.
I can appreciate that you are using a poll to gather results but the wording of the responses is a bit condescending in implying that 'we' as a group have nothing better to do. |

I'm sorry that you feel I'm being condescending in implying that you could be spending more time shooting and reloading already made cases, but feel free to make your own. I'm just trying to convince him to put a little more time to make me (and anyone else who wishs to have him process them) a more finished product. Erin Go braugh and happy Saint Patty's Day  |
I've paid more than $.04 per case for new 223 brass converted to 300/221 over what I could have bought the 223 cases for and thought nothing of it. It's still a lot cheaper than most of the brass I shoot. Bought any 338-378 Weatherby brass lately?
I'd prefer to just buy cases from someone making 300-221 out of new 223 brass than go though the hassle of buying cases, shipping them, waiting, then shipping them back. Hopefully they would select a brand of brass to give the appropriate neck thickness. I don't care about the headstamp as there is not much brass you could confuse with a 300/221 case. Your friend is no businessman. Just handling the cases ought to be worth more than $.04. If he starts getting large orders for what he's doing it's going to seem like work and he'll either quit or have to raise his price. |
No, I would buy a 338 THUMPER™

Four cents a case is a deal deal. It would be a smoking deal if he trimmed them to final length. |
