Phrobis XM9 Prototype bayonet

Bill Porter has once again donated a series of exceptional photos for us all to see. Following is a Phrobis XM9 prototype and you can see a number of unique features in the prototype... Bill pointed out in his e-mail that this prototype weighed to much and was never sumbitted for evaluation.

XM9 Scabbard

Some opportunities have come up for me to add one or two pieces to my collection. I've decided to list this scabbard on ebay but have not listed the XM9 bayonet. If the right offer comes along I could be persuaded to part with both. If anyone is interested drop me an email.XM9 Scabbard Auction

I saw the auction listing for the scabbard on ebay, but it didn't show full pics of the knife that goes with it. Here's a stupid question, why did Phrobis submit a knife with the cutout on the blade for the wire cutter when they submitted a scabbard with a built-in wire cutter?

I got an e-mail from Bill indicating that he is having computer problems and couldn't post this himself...

The photos on the ebay listing are the same ones that are posted above. I didn't post the photos of the bayonet on ebay as it was not included in the auction.

I asked the same question about the existance of a bayonet without the hole in the blade. It turns out that this scabbard was being developed at the same time as the bayonet. The original concept was to use the bayonet and scabbard together as a shear type cutter, similar to the Soviet design. This scabbard was developed as an alternate to using the bayonet blade as part of the wire cutter. The weight of the scabbard turned out to be much greater than that allowed by bid specifications and the scabbards were not submitted. Had they been able to utilize these scabbards, they probably would have eliminated the hole in the blade.

An interesting side note to this; a good friend of mine who owns one of these scabbards asked Barry Brown at Lan-Cay if he would make him a M9 bayonet without the hole in the blade. Barry explained that all of the jigs that Lan-Cay uses for machining the blades utilize the hole in the blade for indexing. Under their current method of manufacturing bayonets, it would not be practical to eliminate the hole.

I had a series of communications with this individual two years ago. he wrote offering me a large sum of money for a particular bayonet that I had featured in a different thread. It was an offer I would have been foolish to disregard. After many frustrating emails I finally told him that I was not interested in dealing with him and not to try any further contact. He makes a very high offer to get you interested then starts making all types of demands. The kicker was he wanted me to ship a four-figure bayonet to him in mainland China and he wouldn't send payment until after he verified that the bayonet I sent him was genuine. Yeah, like that's going to happen. I spoke to a collector in Hong Kong and he thinks he knows who this person is. Has a reputation for ripping off trusting foreigners. It is illegal for Chinese citizens to receive these bayonets so he tells the sellers that the package must have been confiscated by the government. Long and short of it, you don't have the bayonet and he doesn't send you the money. My best advise to you, stay away from this guy.
