New .300 Whisper build
2 Attachment(s)
I've been lurking here a while and learning. I took what I learned and finally built something.
Rifle is a billet upper and lower with 11" barrel and 3 position gas block from TP555 and my YHM SS Phantom QD .30 suppressor. I threw on a Weaver 1-3X variable for load development. Attachment 724 Finally got this group at 50 yards. 10.9gr H4198 208gr Hornady A-max, 1052 fps average for 10 rounds with a called flyer. I managed a group of 1.5" at 100 yards (pic was bad). Not bad considering I was shooting from a card table with one of those triangular plastic rests and no rear support, and the crosshair was only slightly larger than the dot. Attachment 725 Hopefully with the 12X scope I have mounted and a good rest I can get well under MOA. This is a great forum and everything I learned here made this a relatively easy project. |
Did you attach pics?
I'm not seeing them if you did, |
More Pics please. Particularly of the gas block in the VTAC handguard. I have been wanting to do the exact same thing except 9" barrel in a 10" guard but have never seen it done before with an adjustable gas block.
Also, whose barrel are you using, and what gunsmith did the barrel work. I am very close to pulling the trigger on the project but it appears that most barrel manufacturers do not want to make me a wildcat AR barrel and are forcing me to just buy a blank and find a gunsmith. Thanks |
I'll work on getting some more pictures up.
The barrel is a Douglas stainless steel blank, 1 in 8" twist, heavy configuration. It was made by Paladin Machining, tp555 is his user name on this forum. It was ready to install, I just mounted it in my upper. Very good price and good turnaround time when he got the blank in. The gas block is manufactured by him and is a three position block, low pressure, high pressure and off. |

More pics as promised.
The handguard is the rifle length (12"). I tried the midlength (9") and the gasblock screw was inaccessible. Attachment 744 Attachment 745 Attachment 746 I marked the gasblock with a sharpie so I could see the setting better, the block came stamped. Ignore the marks from the pliers on the gas tube, :frown: got it stuck in there once. |
I was just checking out the forums and noticed that I forgot to thank you for the nice pics that I requested and for the swift response. This definately helps me in my build planning. I owe many thanks to all those owners who are posting excellent data/pics/info on their projects. By the way... have you had your whisper out to solely test its accuracy capabilities yet? Just curious as to how it did? Thanks again!

Tag for pics influencing my future build. Nice rifle!
