The official RENT QB's AK-47 Flat bending jig thread (Tapco Flats to Receiver)

I AM CLOSING THIS RENTAL AFTER THE PEOPLE ON THE LIST ARE DONE!
TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT COMMUNICATING AND OTHERS ARE JUST LYING...

IF YOU ARE ON THIS LIST, PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO THE THREAD!

I CAN NOT SEARCH FOR EACH PERSON SO IF YOU DON'T ALLOW E-MAIL
VIA THE BOARD YOU HAD BETTER CHECK THIS THREAD AND YOUR PMs!

I have seen others express interest in renting an AK flat bending jig. I have one of the 555th jigs and we have used it to bend several flats but I will be honest that I have not had the time to finish any of them yet

I have uploaded pics and directions to this other thread on the forums here:
http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?t=164

To bend a flat literally takes about 10-minutes with most of the time being spent getting the flat centered in the jig. I am confident that this could be done with a much smaller press (6-ton perhaps?).

NOTE THIS IS UPDATED!!!

I will rent this for $20 and the renter will agree to ship the jig when finished to the next renter. Please note that this means you may be lucky and have a next person that is local or on the other side of the country! This will still be cheaper then people paying shipping both ways from and back to me and it will decrease the time the jig is on the brown truck by a factor of two allowing more people to use the jig...

ANOTHER BIG UPDATE!!!

I have just purchased a second used 555th jig. I did this so that I can a jig to people faster by having two jigs on rotation at the same time. I hope to have the new jig by next weekend (Apr 2nd) and I will test the new jig out here before I put it into the rotation as well... As far as I can tell this new jig is identical to the one that is in circulation. I assume that it is obvious that this should increase the rate that the list moves!

TERMS UPDATE!!!

As on page two of this thread, it is starting to look like the jig will not last forever so I need to amend my "Unlimited Flats" term. For anybody that signs up to use the jig effective now (4-4-2005 9:30AM EST) the terms are as follows:

Your Rent of $20 includes The use of the Jig and my grease to do upto five flats. Each extra flat after five I would like to request that an extra $0.50 be paid to help cover the additional wear on the jig. You will also be expected to then ship the jig to the next person as described before.

Examples:

You Bend 1 to 5 flats - $20 + shipping to next person
You Bend 6 flats - $20 + shipping to next person + $0.50 in the box)
You Bend 20 flats - $20 + shipping to next person + $7.50 in the box (15 extra at $0.50)
You host a build party and you all do 40 flats = $20 + shipping to next person + $17.50 in the box (5 included + 35 extra at $0.50/each)

Updata again...

We now have two Jigs that will be circulating:

Quote:

Jig #1:

This is the original jig. This jig only requires 7/16 wrenches to assemble or disassemble. Enclosed with the jig is a 7/16 wrench, 7/16 socket and 1/4 ratchet, and a steel bar that MUST BE USED BETWEEN YOUR PRESS AND JIG to bend your flats. There are also a pair of extra bolts in case the original bolt threads get buggered up plus a new can of grease. There will also be a zip-lock bag for any extra money (more below)
Quote:

Jig #2.

This is my new jig. This jig requires 7/16 tools for the bolts of the ends but the flat is held in place with larger bolts requiring 1/2 tools. With this jig you will find a 7/16 and 1/2 wrench, 7/16 and 1/2 socket and ratchet, small piece of steel THAT MUST BE USED BETWEEN PRESS AN JIG. There is also an extra set of bolts and new can of grease as well as a ziplock for any extra money.
Regarding the extra money... if there gets to be a sizable amount of money in the box, please contact me and I wil have you send the money to me instead of having it ship around with the tools. With the understanding that the two sets of tools are worth at least $150 I am not woried about amounts upto $40 and I don't expect that there will get to be that much money anytime soon.

Now, because the old box got really trashed in the last round I made a pair of new boxes. You may laugh at my insanity but the new boxes would be tough for any but the most destructive UPS or Fed Ex driver to dammage and I did the work using expanding foam so the boxes gained considerable strength without additional weight. Shipping for me when I sent the two jigs out last time was under $20 with an extra $150 insurance on them.

My only two requests are that the jig be shipped with some method of tracking and that everybody pays the cost of delivery confirmation (it only cost me $1 for delivery confirmation last time).

Lastly, I do not want ANY MONEY until I get word that the jig is ready to ship to the next person. I will then ask for payment via PAYPAL. You can see the payment page here: http://quarterbore-inc.com/555thjig.html BUT PLEASE DON'T PAY UNTIL I SAY TO! If you hate PAYPAL and refuse to pay via PAYPAL then please mail me your payment in ADVANCE with clear info on who you are! PM ME FOR MY ADDRESS!

I thought this over and I have a suggestion... I am going to increase the rent price to $20 and I will cover shipping to every fifth buyer. The way this will work is as follows...
  • I ship the jig at my cost to the first renter.
1st Person uses the jig, when done I collect rent from 2nd person.
1st Person pays shipping to 2nd person.
2nd person uses jig, when done I collect rent from 3rd person.
2nd Person pays shipping to 3rd person
... and so on and so forth ...
5th person uses the jig and returns jig to me so that I can look it over (or to another person at my choice)

If there are less then four people on the wait list then I will need to evaluate how this can work...

I am suggesting this method as it seems stupid for people to pay me to ship the jig to them and then they pay to ship the jig back to me... can we all agree to accept the risks that the next person on the list could be some distance from you and you would simply ship the jig to the next person? This way everybody would only need to pay one shipping and the UPS truck isn't delivering and sending out this jig from my house every coupe days...

Please advise of oppinions.... the problem is that the first shipment was done tonight and shipping was paid by the first renter... we just need a way to do this that is fair... I can refund the first shipping cost and we will all work with the $20 + shipping to next person for now on and that is the way it is going to work for anybody new joining the list unless someone has a good reason to to it another way......

UPDATES AS THE JIG IS USED BY YOU GUYS!

I got an e-mail from Cumberland and he managed to bend one of his flats but he pointed out that I forgot to get the steel bar that is used on the top of the jig to press the flats. I have sent the steel bar out this morning via USPS Priority mail and Cumberland is going to do the rest of his flats this week while I get the steel to him...

Note: It is important to use this bar to prevent damage to the jig. It is the piece shown in the pics that sits between the press bar and the top of the jig. The top of the jig is the parts that forms the uper rails on the receiver so it is important that this does not get bent by the press...

Thanks to Cumberland for letting me know I forgot to add the bar to the box!

Zaplatus 02-17-2005 07:07 AM

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me!

I like the idea man. All i need is the email address of the #1 renter and i'll forward my shipping address to him. Once he, or you tell me it is ready to be shipped i will complete the Rent transaction ($20 fee) with you. I guess once funds are recieved from Me to you, you can tell him to ship to me. Looks complex on paper with the "him,Me,You's" but i like the it. Let me know when to make payment. :D

Quarterbore 02-19-2005 01:16 PM

After I get word that a person is done I will e-mail the next person in line requesting their address and give them a link to pay their rent via PAYPAL or Credit Card (Master Card Visa). I will allow people three days to reply and pay before I move to the next person in line. If they pay after the three days and I have offered the jig rental to someone else, the next person WILL GET THE JIG FIRST and I will hold the rent of the late payer and the late payer will get the jig after the person after them on the list is done.

If a person does not have their flats or a press yet or if the timing is not good, please just let me know when I sent the e-mail and I will go to the next person in line... You will slide down one place in line and I will give you another shot when the jig becomes available. After three "I am not ready's, I am going to drop such a person to the end of the list to save me and everybody else the hastle.

Also, if I check feedback on anybody or I hear from others that someone on the list is not trust worthy you may get deleted from the list without notice at any time.

Flat jig

Sounds like just what I need. Please put me on the list and I will order my flats tomorrow.

Quarterbore 03-25-2005 09:01 PM

updated again...

I am having problems getting in touch with people... I am going to start collecting the payment earlier as you guys all want the jig ASAP and there is no sence in having it sit when I can't get ahold of people to get their payment and address...

I will now start collecting payment when the person before you confirms that they have received the jig!

PLEASE
... When you pay and e-mail me your contact info ... ALSO POST HERE letting me know that you paid and how you paid. I ask this as that way I will know to look for your e-mail and/or we can find other ways to get in touch if I don't get your e-mail!

I am always updating the first post so use it to make sure you didn't get skipped because your SPAM box doesn't like me! Then you might consider posting here and we can make alternate arrangements.

mgnew 03-25-2005 11:36 PM

Quarterbore 04-02-2005 06:36 PM

Updated in original post... seems my jig has been bent :?

Rev Jim Jones 04-03-2005 01:48 PM

Seems as if someone was bending flats without using the top plate .Maybe you could clamp and heat it till straight ?

Motormitch 04-03-2005 10:56 PM

Will I finish with Jig and will send it back to Ken to look over . What I found was two thing first the center bar was bent by over thigh ting the four screws that clamp the flat to the side plates when I got the Jig it had a 3/8 bow in the bar which was flatting my dip at the bottom by the mag well. I don’t how many flats were done you can over thigh need just enough to keep the flat from moving . Even so this bar needs to be check every five or six uses it still may move a little and need to be straighten. Also both side rails were bent at it weakest spot . I think this was from to much pressure going down possibly from a electric or air operated press I have a 12 ton press and I think it could bend it if I wasn’t careful it only needs to go down to the bottom till the bolts tough the bottom of the Jig no real pressure in needed to be seated. I have straighten all the bars and bent 15 flats seems to be working good.
:D

Quarterbore 04-04-2005 10:46 AM

Thanks Motormitch!

I think that with the volume of flats that are being pressed by the jig that the jig is bending just from use and I need to work on a list of things to check on the jig before using. Certianly an automatic press or someone that isn't careful could bend things like you describe so I will have to update the directions a little as well.

I also need to evaluate my "unlimited flats" offer as this jig isn't quite paid for yet and we are seeing signs that the jig may not be as rugged as I thought... For all future people that will get added to the list I am going to ask for an additional $0.50 for each flats you bend after the first five.

This is really for bigger build parties where the jig may be used to press a dozen to many dozens of flats by many users. This will be updated to the terms above and I am making this optional for the people on the list already as the original agreement was as many flats as you want.

Thanks Again to all!
QB

This is also on the honor system and

Motormitch 04-04-2005 10:09 PM

Ken the jig is up and on it way sent USPS two or three days check e mail Motormitch

mgnew 04-05-2005 09:00 PM

There is a great sample video on bending flats at http://www.homegunsmith.com/cgi-bin/...t=SF;f=24;st=0
I know the address looks long  just go there. When you get there look for the Ultimate AK Builder Video by Pvt Ryan. It takes a while to download but it is well worth while. If the rest of the tape is as good as the six minute clip it will worth the price, and might save a lot of wear and tear on Ken's bending jigs.

Quarterbore 04-05-2005 11:55 PM

Thanks for that link! That looks like a good DVD to get my hands on! I have to be honest though I see no reason to take as little of steps as he did... Yes, It isn't a good idea to press the entire flat in a single operation but those first few bends didn't do a whole lot of anything...

I have the sample video downloaded and I will send the sample video with the jig when it goes back out.

Also, I got the second 555th jig I bought. What a major disapointment! The fit and worksmanship on this second jig is just aughful and the holes for the bolts don't seem to be straight through the jig. I am going to need to ream out the holes and do a little fitting on this new jig before I send it out. Definately not as nice as the jig that we have been using so I am hoping that Motormitch's fix is on the money and I will get that jig back out.

KillJoy149 04-13-2005 10:14 AM

What is the current status of the Jig(s)?

KillJoy

Quarterbore 04-13-2005 10:27 AM

Sorry... I got the jig back late last week and I had to travel last weekend and I have been swamped at work... I want to bend a flat this comming weekend and compare it to the flat that I bent before the jig went out originally.

Also, I did get the second 555th jig that I bought but that jig really needs some work. The second jig's holes where the bolts go through to hold the jig together are poorly drilled and the jig is a real PITA to assemble and disassemble as it binds pretty bad. I am going to try to repair or improve the second jig this weekend and I will use that jig to bend a flat as well...

As long as the flats from before, with the original jig, and the new jig all come out well I will have the TWO jigs out as early as Saturday or Sunday (Apr 16 -17th 2005). I just wanted to have both jigs on hand at the same time so that I can compare the flats bent with the two as if one of them isn't working right I don't want to be renting it out...

Sorry for the delay but work is starting to put a pinch on gun time! I think it's time to become a bum --- Gun BUM :D

KillJoy149 04-19-2005 02:52 PM

Okay, not to be a nag :) , but what is the status of the JIGs?

Are they in good shape? Are they functional? Are they accurate?

KillJoy

Quarterbore 04-21-2005 08:32 PM

Sorry... work has been keeping me late and the kids and I all got sick over the past week... I did get to look atthe jig that Motormitch sent back and I am not sure if the marks on the top of the jig are from him straightening the jig or not but if not it is a sure sign that someone didn't use the steel bar and applied WAY TOO MUCH FORCE...

I also got to compare the jig I had out with the new jig and frankly the new jig sucks in comparison. It's nt that it will not work, it's just a little funky in the way it was built! I'll show you all when I get some pics!

I hope to get some time to bend a couple flats tomorrow as I am planning to take the day off work... I will take some pics and post them as well.

Motormitch 04-22-2005 10:33 PM

The jig did fine takes little getting use to my concern was the front bend was not a good square and was little rounded but should work out OK . Most of my bends started with bending the back first and work it forward . Centering the flat took little time. Over all went good . motormitch

Sorry. I meant from QB's testing this last weekend.

I am hoping the Jigs will stay in rotation long enough that I get a chance to try one out.

Sorry again for the delays... I managed to get the new jig fixed up and I had to redrill all the holes as it was a real PITA to get the bolts in and out... burs, undersized holes, and just sloppy. I used the new jig to bend a flat and it came out great and I took a ton of photos that I want to get uploaded into an album so people can see how to bend in a way that will not dammage the jig.

The original jig is still waiting on me to get a free evening to bend a flat with it too... the jig looks like it will work fine but it is obvious that somebody really pressed the living piss out of it without the steel bar between the top of the jig and the press ram... This is the reason I am taking some time to get tons of photos so I can put instructions in with the jigs to try to save these jigs...

I am swamped at work and I am actually still working on work stuff now (yea it's 11:34 PM here) but the project is out of my hands by Friday so there is hope that I get a break before my next buisy spell...

OK, I have asked three people for money and nobody is replying that they are not interested anymore or submitting payment, or ??? I will give 24-hrs and then move to the next person until I have someone to send the jig to. I have been hoping to send out a jig for three days now with no luck...

If someone after you get's their payment in before you they will get the jig first and you will get the first jig that becomes available. I am going to try to have one person pre-paid so I have an address ready for the person holding the jig for now on...
