Updated in original post... seems my jig has been bent :?

Seems as if someone was bending flats without using the top plate .Maybe you could clamp and heat it till straight ?

Motormitch 04-03-2005 10:56 PM

Will I finish with Jig and will send it back to Ken to look over . What I found was two thing first the center bar was bent by over thigh ting the four screws that clamp the flat to the side plates when I got the Jig it had a 3/8 bow in the bar which was flatting my dip at the bottom by the mag well. I don’t how many flats were done you can over thigh need just enough to keep the flat from moving . Even so this bar needs to be check every five or six uses it still may move a little and need to be straighten. Also both side rails were bent at it weakest spot . I think this was from to much pressure going down possibly from a electric or air operated press I have a 12 ton press and I think it could bend it if I wasn’t careful it only needs to go down to the bottom till the bolts tough the bottom of the Jig no real pressure in needed to be seated. I have straighten all the bars and bent 15 flats seems to be working good.
:D

Thanks Motormitch!

I think that with the volume of flats that are being pressed by the jig that the jig is bending just from use and I need to work on a list of things to check on the jig before using. Certianly an automatic press or someone that isn't careful could bend things like you describe so I will have to update the directions a little as well.

I also need to evaluate my "unlimited flats" offer as this jig isn't quite paid for yet and we are seeing signs that the jig may not be as rugged as I thought... For all future people that will get added to the list I am going to ask for an additional $0.50 for each flats you bend after the first five.

This is really for bigger build parties where the jig may be used to press a dozen to many dozens of flats by many users. This will be updated to the terms above and I am making this optional for the people on the list already as the original agreement was as many flats as you want.

Thanks Again to all!

There is a great sample video on bending flats at http://www.homegunsmith.com/cgi-bin/...t=SF;f=24;st=0
I know the address looks long  just go there. When you get there look for the Ultimate AK Builder Video by Pvt Ryan. It takes a while to download but it is well worth while. If the rest of the tape is as good as the six minute clip it will worth the price, and might save a lot of wear and tear on Ken's bending jigs.

Thanks for that link! That looks like a good DVD to get my hands on! I have to be honest though I see no reason to take as little of steps as he did... Yes, It isn't a good idea to press the entire flat in a single operation but those first few bends didn't do a whole lot of anything...

I have the sample video downloaded and I will send the sample video with the jig when it goes back out.

Also, I got the second 555th jig I bought. What a major disapointment! The fit and worksmanship on this second jig is just aughful and the holes for the bolts don't seem to be straight through the jig. I am going to need to ream out the holes and do a little fitting on this new jig before I send it out. Definately not as nice as the jig that we have been using so I am hoping that Motormitch's fix is on the money and I will get that jig back out.
