What Powders Are Best For Subsonics???

I am geting ready to start loading subsonics for my 300-221 AR that I just finished and am wondering what powders will give me the best results? I will be using 180 to 240 grain bullets through a 16in bbl, and it will have a suppressor on it(if that makes any diff). Also any good load data would be greatly app!!!

I like VV110, but lil gun is good too. Whatever you can find these days.

I use 9.0gr of VV110. But I have a 9.5" barrel. I'd start with 9gr or so and work down to the velocity you want. I use the Hornady 208gr Amax bullets.

A chrono really helps of course. But since you are looking for subsonic, if you start high, and get the sonic crack, you should know when you get below that. Having a second person as a spotter off to the side also helps.

cav_scout_tj: Can you suggest a good load for the 208 A-max? I have a similar setup - 8.5" barrel sbr AR whisper.

There are so many variables, like gas port size and such that each subsonic load must be tuned to the rifle. Around 9 grains is a good place to start. As I said, I like lil'gun and VV110-- whatever you can find these days. I have used 2400, but its dirty. I cant really say more than about 9 grains. I loaded some at 13 grains by mistake once, and they were fast, but still no where near max.

I did try small pistol primers-- running out of small rifle primers-- and they didnt change the load at all. You really need a chronograph to tune.

Hmm. Wideners currently has wolf SR primers in stock if you need them but be quick.

Powder

I like 1680 .. I fooled around with a lot of other powerders and I found I can load 1680 subsonic and keep the gas port in the carbine position and not change the buffers or the springs. It cycles and locks the bolt back on the last round.
With the suppressor on it works even better.

I've been able to load 1680 to cycle reliably with 150gr to 220gr bullets. That is in a M1S upper with a plain gas block.
