Newby needs help with Rem 700 and AAC Cyclone
 

I just got my AAC Cylcone last week for my whisper.

Gun is a Remington 700 with 16.5 douglas barrel. Before I got the cyclone, the gun would shoot a ragged hole at 100 yards using 208 grain amax's and AA#9 at 1040 fps.

I put the can on today and shot it on paper and the groups were horrible. 1-2 inches was best and 3-5 was average.

No baffle strikes, can screws on tight with no woble.

Can anybody help me out with any ideas?

barrel resonance changed with the added weight and length.

Adding a pressure point between the barrel and stock would possibly help, but I would use it as a last resort. Even then it's not a hard cut science. You would have to experiment with the location and amount of pressure. My first step would be trying a different load. Different bullet or a powder with a different burn rate will change barrel resonance.

Adding a pressure point is easy to try at the range though. All it takes is a business card.
Be sure your action screws are tight. If you ever remove the stock be sure you're consistent with the amount of torque you use to tighten the screws.

I had an old cyclone and it tightened my groups. AMAZING CAN! .. My SOT messed up the threads in the can so it went back to AAC for repair... They replaced it instead of fixing it. With the new Cyclone my groups did just what yours did. :mad:

Mike Mers wants mine back to look at. I would be much happier with my old can back. I was getting 1/3 MOA with it I LOVED that can! .. Now I just want to puke. Same gun same loads, same range, same firing point.. Last time I sent it back to AAC it was there for about 6 months.

I am going to re-test it and see if it was me. But I am not holding my breath.

If there is a GOD it would be nice if he could turn my new improved Cyclone back into the Old ACCURATE cyclone. But he/she has more important things to do. (like getting the new Prodigy cores ready) LOL.

Maybe AAC has an old style Cyclone they can give me back. I would LOVE that.

Mine is the old style. My problem is with the HS precision stock i put on it. Something is causing the harmonics to go crazy. It is at my gunsmith's right now.

barrels and harmonics, what a complicated subject.

Regarding the h-s precision stocks, they are usually pretty good, the aluminium bedding block being properly machined ,fit is supposed to be good with the receiver. but often it is the receiver that is at fault specialy for remington with all kind of outside tolerances.
doing a bedding between the barrel block and the reciever , and 1"under the barrel shank might help improve things a bit, but that is not 100% guaranty.

If accuracy is not that good, check barrel concentricity with silencer (actully, that should be the task of the silencer manufacturer), crown at the end of barrel , recrown if necessary;but remember that it can take up to 30 round through the barrel to clear the crown burrs and restore accuracy.

Right now I am hoping for a 1" rifle at 100 yards. Before the HS stock I was getting 1/2 at 100 yards.

The cyclone is quiet, but the poi shift is off a 12x12 target at 100 yards. Once I get my gun shooting right I am going to address the can.

Gunsmith says threads are fine and no baffle strikes at all.
