Hey! My 300-221 AR Upper Arrived!

And it looks good! The whole rifle (sans optic) is lighter with the 300-221 upper on than my 223 varmint upper with 24" x 0.930" barrel. I can see why you guys like SBRs now. They must be right handy. Although compared to what I'm used to in an AR, this package feels like a brush gun.

The only minor hitch is the take down pin fit. The rear pin is very tight. I'm guessing this is due to slop in DPMS' tolerances. Both uppers have the DPMS A3 style upper for the A-15 lower. The 223 one is a breeze to pop on and off. Hopefully the pin holes on the 300-221 upper will wear in so I don't have to ream out the rear one.

Now I just need to load some rounds and take it to the range. I'm going to be mounting the same optic as the 223. I bought it before I noticed some limitations in the range finder. I'm going to have to give the Burris 4-12x42 Laser Scope only a B.

This thread would be worthless without pix:

It's hard to read, but it says, "FUDMOTTIN WHISPER".

Since the pictures were taken, I shifted the scope forward to improve eye relief. I also get better access to the charging handle.

The scope seems ridiculously large on the whisper upper. But who cares what it looks like so long as it shoots, right?

Very nice- I am sure you will be having fun :)

I think so to.

Doesn't that barrel just scream out for a reflex can? A can that makes it just back to the hand guard would give me the SRB look. I would be lying if I said that SRBs don't look cool. I just don't like the baggage that comes with them.

Do you like that scope?
Any video off of it?

Fudmottin 03-10-2009 12:41 AM

I mostly like it. I was loving the repeatable range finding ability. Not so hot about the lower portion of the reticle (I opted for the mil-dot as backup to the range finder). I also got a rude surprise at the range when it stopped finding the range for me in sunlight at about 200 meters. I'm hoping it is just due to a low battery and the fact that it was 31F at the time.

If you don't mind the politically incorrect, you can watch a video I put up on YouTube where the camera is looking through the scope:

It does have a yard mode. I just prefer meters. There was no magazine in the rifle at the time of recording. But someone looking at my window would probably have been most annoyed.

Nice vid.
Does the scope also have any video output feeds?
So you have to press the range finder button each time for yardage?

No video out on the scope. No built in ballistic computer that can project a dot on where the bullet will go. But at least the glass is decent as well as the reticle (except for the lower portion which uses bullet drop lines).

There is a remote control believe it or not. So it is supposed to be possible to have place a button in a more convenient location to activate the range finder when it is in standby mode. Either the remote does not work or it shipped with a dead battery. So I haven't been able to test that feature. It would be nice to not have to press the button on the scope to fire the laser and get a range.

You can also hold the button for tracking mode. The range finder will keep updating the range until you release. It's supposed to be useful for moving targets like a deer quartering away from you.

The laser will draw a fair bit of power and the battery is not huge. I forget how many actual range findings you are supposed to get out of the battery. I do know that I was playing with that feature a lot when I got the scope. So from whatever condition the battery was in when I got it, I ranged a fair number of times.

I should mention (although you probably noticed) that one reason the scope looks so huge is that I have the sunshade installed. That is about ten centimeters long. The scope is still not small for a 42mm objective though.

I got the scope here:
