Finding Center on Dowels

Hi,

I'm starting to work with dowels, and I'm wondering if anyone has tips for finding the center? I'm having a hard time with it right now, and as a result, I end up with pretty uneven work.

How big in dia? I have seen little centering thingies with points that you just line up the edge and tap in...Bob
