Sub Sonic 220gr Sierra Pro's

Got a Box of these to see if I can get the same 100yd. accuracy as the smk's @ 10 bucks cheaper. Looks like they got a longer bearing surface, so I will probably need to change the load. Anybody load these subsonic in a 10" AR15 yet? Thanks in advance.
Matt

You talking the round-nose soft points? (like the one on the left)

They do okay, but I haven't been able to get them to perform as well as the 220 gr. SMKs.

I have loaded them in my remington 700. Accuracy is about 1 1/2 at 100 yards compared with 1/2 inch with 208 grain amaxs.

egraham, have you shot the A-maxes into water by chance to see if they open up at subsonic velocities?

.
I changed bullet seating depth with the round nose until
I found the wave to ride then the groups were as good as the 220 match
bullets.

I have not shot them into water but have shot a 125lb doe. The entrance hole was 30 cal and the exit hole was as big as a quarter. Shot through the shoulder. Went 25 yards. deer was 100 yards away.

Shot another 120 lb doe with the 220 sierra soft point. Exit hole was slightly smaller. Deer ran about 30 yards. Deer was 100 yards away.

Shot another 120 lb doe with a 220 smk. Shot the deer facing me in the chest. Bullet lodged in the hindquarter. Deer ran about 30 yards and then fell down. Tried to get up but could not. I found the bullet and it barely expanded at all. Deer was about 35-40 yards away when I shot.

The reason I went to the amax's is because I thought the red tip would help with the expansion. Accuracy is also the best of the 3 out of my remington 700 with douglas barrel.

Excellent! What length barrel? Did you use more or less powder? Subsonic?

In my remington 700 action and douglad barrel i am seating them as far as the magazine will allow. there is a considerable amount of jump for the round nose bullet.

The amax is a lot longer and therefore seats a lot closer to the lands so I think that is why it shoots better.

10 inch and 16 inch barrels, I start with subsonic loads at 1050 fps.
You can change powder charge to time the bullet when it leaves
the barrel or you could time the bullet by changing the oal (bullet seating depth)

I went with a Model 1 sales 10.5" AR15 barrel. My maximum OAL with 220 SMK's is 2.191". I might not have enough room for the Pro Hunter.
