Scabbard question
 

I have noticed that some of the scabbards that hold the Phrobis knives have a snap that secures the handle and some do not. Is there any ryhme or reason to that or are some of the scabbards just missing that snap? I haven't yet discovered the common denominator for that discrepancy.

The original Phrobis scabbards had two straps to hold the bayonet. One secured the cross guard and snapped to the face of the scabbard and the other went around the grip. This grip strap was attached to the removable portion of the scabbard hanger, the part with the male Fastex and the Bianchi clip. The Lan-Cay bayonets are held into the scabbard by one strap that wraps around the grip just about the mouth of the scabbard body. There is not a strap on the upper portion of the hanger assembly like on the Phrobis.

One of two things results in the missing strap. The stitching that held the upper strap in place broke and the strap fell off. This is a very common occurance. Second is that the original Fastex assembly broke or was damaged and was replaced with the later style that was used on the Lan-Cay scabbards.

I should have saved somewhere a picture that Gary Cunningham posted in the previous forum, back in 2005-2006, that confirmed that it was an "official" Army practice to replace the original Fastex (used with the Phorbis M9) with the newer one.
I remember that the document said something about a problem with the original Fastex that let the scabbard falling down.
Will try to find this paper when I'll be back from holidays.
