Tipped barnes 30 carbine bullet... I like it. Let us know how the testing goes. With a pretty short barrel too, I'd be interested in some.
I did shoot the barnes 150 30-30 bullet into water jugs, and it made a great mushroom. Too bad barnes doesnt make anything in between. Actually the 130 TSX (no tip) might be a good place to start, and drill out a bigger hollow point, and then put a tip in there. Might end up with a good weight. |
Its just too bad they are so expensive!
I'll be making these tips out of Delrin(Acetal) plastic, CNC turned. Hopefully they work well. I should probably put in an order for some of these bullets. Jon |
Sierra makes a 125g 30-30 flat nose bullet that is their recommendation for hog/deer hunting w/300 W velocities as they are close to 30-30 velocities.
These bullets are designed to open up but stay together @ these velocities. Give them a try-they feed ok thru my gun. .308 dia. (.30-30) 125 gr. HP/FN Pro-Hunter 2020 Rifle |
Pitt300, Do those flat nose bullets feed in an AR?
Some of my hollow point bullets that I made had big noses and did not want to feed in mine. I have some of those 30 carbine Barnes bullets on order(only 50) and they shoudl be here Thurs or Fri, I might get a chance to make tips. Does anyone want any tips for these? They'd be black delrin I noticed that the BC on midwayusa is more than double the BC from the Barnes website, hopefully these tips will bring it up and hopefully I can get 2200fps out of my 10.5" barrel. Jon |
They feed fine in mine & group well.

I have 50 of those barnes 30 carbine bullets in front of me.They measure .755" long, cavity is .120" flat to flat on the inside and about the same from corner to corner(its a hex). The cavity is .375" deep. The outside diameter(of what the tip will be) is about .170".
I'll have to find somthing to measure the radius on it. it doesn't seem to be all that large(.75-1"). Jon |

I'd love to take 10 off your hands to test with. then maybe a bunch of tips... |
Stupid question for you guys... would 300w subsonic work for hunting? I understand you try to get a heavier bullet to tumble/etc rather than expand, but I don't know how clean a kill it makes.
Just wondering (because this would also make me wonder then if a suppressed 300w would be an ok deer gun to say 150 yds or so) |
I'm hog hunting tonight w/subsonic 220s.
They can be very deadly & quick killing if placed properly. In TX I cannot hunt game animals (deer/turkey) w/suppressor but if I go back to our farm in TN this year I may take Whisper because there I can kill deer w/suppressed firearm & I can harvest 3 doe a day for every day of the season (2 bucks total). |
180Gr PPT
I hunt with a TC 44 mag.
My son hunts with my 300 Whisper AR with a 180 grain powerpoint on 14.0 gr of H110. About 1500-1600FPS enough power for the woods we hunt. Shots are less than 100 yards. BTW no kick a 13 year old can handel it, and history has proven that the 180 Gr .357 is an adequate deer round. Best bang for the buck. Yes the .458 socom would be better but he's not ready for it yet and a lot more per shot. Bill |
