338 whisper fal

If I were to do a 338 Whipser FAL I would simply have a custom barrel built in 338 Whisper and use your 308 components.
I am not an expert on the 338 Whisper but I do know that there are two versions of it. One is based on the 221 Fireball case like the 300 Whisper while the second, and the one you are describing, was designed to run in 308 sized magazines and uses most of the 308 base rifle components (bolt face especially). This sounds like a fun project and the FAL with it's adjustable gas system is a logical choice for such a project in a semiauto even though I would lean towards doing one in a bolt gun myself... Also, i have seen a few posts asking about the 338 Whisper and if there is enough interest I will start a 338 Whisper forum as well... |

First off I would wonder what the expected results for the gun would be ? The Fal is a fine platform as a battle rifle, and some of them are quite capable of Good accuracy. They are of a rear locking tilting bolt design and can not be expected to be a prescision weapon. The gas system is designed to leak , there are new parts to tighten up those area's that are not supposed to , but it vents all the ported gas out about an inch behind where it picks it up. I have personally built one in 358 win
( I put it on a short gas system ALA' DSA elite ) 16" carbine. I can say it is a hoot. It gets carried alot up here ( Alaska ) as my winter hunting rig.. it stands up to snomobile abuse well. I have considered doing one in 338br ( 338 whisper #1) but I never realy could figure out why I would want too. I dont forsee supressing the rifle and a carbine with a High BC long range bullet ? the two dont mix well. I would love to hear about one if someone does it ! Dan |
4-D PRODUCTS OF BRUNSWICK, GEOWJAH CAN OFFER A .338/7MMbBR REAMER FOR $146 OUTRIGHT OR RENTED FOR $50 IF YOUR BARREL MAKER DOESN'T HAVE ONE. ASK FOR KEN DICKERSON. DOUGLAS DOESN'T AND THEY ADVISED AGAINST DOING THEIR 7MMBR AND THEN RE-REAMING IT WITH A SECOND REAMER TO GET A .338 NECK.
DOUGLAS FELT ACCURACY WOULD BE AN ISSUE BUT A PRODUCTION OPERATION MAY NOT DEVOTE THE TIME TO THAT TO DO THE JOB THE WAY THEY FEEL IT SHOULD BE DONE. |
.338/7mmBr barrel order
After agonizing of which of several projects to get started on and which could be most profitably completed with the greatest chance of actually producing sumpin' dat would shoot, I said, "what de heck" and tentatively ordered a douglas barrel.
I have a Savage 110F and a spare barrel in .308 stainless 26" fluted form. Got it new at auction Arms. (Death to Ebay users). I decided to duplicate this in .338 whisper. It is a tad longish as SSK says these are made anywhere from 6" to 19" or a bit less for sub-sonic apps. I figure I can play with the long barrel and factor in the chance that the bullet is likely to wind up sorta-kinda dribbling out of the barrel on light loads. The nice thing is that with record keeping it can be worked down to a shorter length which is ideal for whatever application and bullet are used. |
