Top 5
After reading the Chevron thread and seeing some great pics of this particular M9 I was wondering what would be the top 5 M9 Bayonets to collect; whether they be Buck, Phrobis, Buck/Phrobis, Lancay or whatever. My pick would be (1) the 'crazy' 3-line Phrobis with the Chevron; (2) the General Cutlery M9 made for LANCAY; (3) the 'last ditch' M9 with Buck on one side and the 3-line 'crazy' 9 Phrobis brand on the other; (4) the Buck 'riveted pommel' M9 prototype made for the USMC; and (5) the military issue 'crazy' 9 3-line military issue Phrobis. I think the small font 4-line military issue would be a runner up. Unfortunately I have only #5 above and in poor condition at that.

I am pretty sure you listed the toughest USGI M9s to find.
The Crazy 9 is on EBAY all the time as is the various other 4-line knives but the knives you list as 1 - 4 are certainly a challange to find. |
Here's what I think:
1) Phrobis XM9 Trials bayonet 2) Buck solid tang USMC (riveted pommel or threaded tang) 3) LanCay solid tang (Army or USMC) 4) Phrobis Chevron 5) LanCay shallow fuller (the issue piece from the early 1990s) There are other pieces that were made in lesser quantities, but I think these are the most desireable. |
Well, I have numbers 1, 2, and 4...I would have had number 5 on ebay if someone hadn't have contacted the seller by email and made an offer to them and then they stopped the auction. I have lost too many auctions that way. I do have 2 General Cutlery LANCAYs and a few semi rare ones.

Hey Rex,
Do you have a complete XM9 or the blade blank? |
I have the knife... I do not have the scabbard or the pommel, or pommel screw.. Right now I have a pommel and screw off of another phrobis knife on it...I know the original ones have a machined m7 pommel...

Well, in the top of mine "most wanted" list there is actually a bayonet that I never saw on ebay for sale.
It is a commercial variant made by Phrobis during the desert storm war, with a tan handle and (if I remember correctly), a tan scabbard (old style-not M9A1), but black magazine pouch and black webbing top strap. I'm not referring to the tan M9A1, which I already have, nor to the commemorative desert storm M9A1 (the one with the nation names on the blade). I saw a picture of this particular bayonet in the Homer Brett's book, but I don't have any reference, here at work, and I can't remember the markings on the blade. I don't know how how rare it is. Bill? |
