The Xebec Barrel Press seems to be the gold standard in Barrel Press design at least to what I have seen for sale so far. Following is a description of this press kit from Xebec who sells these:

1) Trunnion push block (used to apply pressure to the receiver/trunnion assembly without damaging the receiver shell during barrel installation)
2) Hex key (Used with trunnion push block)
3) Shim set (Used with trunnion push block)
4) Barrel blocks (Used to hold the barrel during barrel installation. Also functions as receiver support blocks for barrel cross-pin installation/removal)
5) 2 Piece trunnion support blocks for barrel press–out

- A note about the function and application of the kits: This kit is designed to aid in the assembly and disassembly operations typically done on a hydraulic shop press of 12 through 20 tons. These operations include the removal of the complete barrel assembly from the trunnion (or complete receiver/trunnion assembly) on AKM/AK-74 rifles and their variants, and re-installation of the complete barrel assembly to a complete riveted receiver/trunnion assembly. The tools provided allow for a stable setup which helps to prevent damage to the barrel, trunnion, or receiver during the pressing operations.
- Other tools necessary for assembly/disassemblÿC The most important tools necessary for the assembly/disassembly pressing operation not included in the kit are the shop press and head space gauges. This kit does not include any tools for the riveting operations. These riveting tools must be shop made or purchased from another source.

When is it necessary to use a barrel press? If I buy an AK kit is there barerel pressing required. Sorry for the stupid question, wnat to build one haven't tried yet.

If you want to do a rivet build you will need to press the barrel. If you do a screw build and you have a kit that has the barrel pressed into the front trunion you will not need to press the barrel...

As an example, I have really only done two AK builds (well I have only done 1 but I helped a buddy do his) so far. Both of these builds were AMD-65 kits where the barrel was still pressed into the front trunion. All I needed to do was drill and tap the rivet holes and use the proper button head screws to attach the front trunion with the barrel attached to the front of the receiver....

With a rivet build, you need to have the barrel out of the front trunion and you rivet the front trunion to the receiver. When the front trunion is attached to the receiver, you then use this type of barrel press to put the barrel into the front trunion. This type of press is critical to support the receiver and allow the barrel to be properly set into the trunion...

One of these days I will get some time to do a build and I do have all the tools, receivers, and kits waiting... Just been too darned busy to get into the shop and of course winter in an unheated shop as been a motivation killing effect as well...

I cant get the link of where to buy this press to work.Any info would be helpful .It takes me to guns network where I cant get anything to work for me even after signing up.

Got my press kit yesterday.Thanks xebec.I had my barrel removed without damage in 5 minuets. Very stable and safe compaired to the method I was using. The parts are all very well made .Thanks

I am going to be pressing a barrel tonight and I lost my directions on how to use the kit... I can figure the basics out from the thread but here is another helpful tidbit I got from the web:

The tool in the upper left hand corner is used to press the trunion on the barrel. The long "post" presses on the upper part of the trunion and the short "post" presses in the mag well area of the trunion.

The round bar in the right side of picture is used between the tool with the posts and the boom on the hydrolic press. The trick is to keep everything lined up. As you begin pressing the trunion on the barrel it tends to want to go on or slip to one side. This can lead to a few false starts.

The tool on the bottom left side of the picture holds the barrel while it is being press in. The smaller hole catches teh barrel just around the gas block. It is in that area where there is a "step" in the barrel. The larger hole is were the gas block goes through.
