New Whisper
I have a few of the little Whisper guns. The latest being built by forum member Spook. This is the second 300 Whisper upper he has built for me.
I had this built with only shooting 125 Sierra Matchkings, 125 Speer TNTs and 125 Nosler Ballistic Tips supersonic in mind, no subs. Spook used a 14 twist Mike Rock barrel with a carbine length gas system. The gas block is a PRI adjustable. The upper is a rifle length VLTOR mono upper. The scope is a Schmidt & Bender 1-4 Short Dot in LaRue rings with a 3gunstuff cat-tail. The lower is an STI with a JP trigger (my only lower without a Geissele 2 stage) and Magpul UBR stock. The brake is a Sure Fire, as is the can. Even with the can it is still pretty light. I took it to the range and using Lake City brass, AA1680 and N-110 and 125 Sierras going the speed of heat, I was able to shoot several 5 shot groups under .5 inches at 100 yards. Even with this stout load, recoil was very mild. With the can the POI shift was very repeatable and recoil was still mild. The difference in hitting a steel plate at 300 yards compared to a 223 with any bullet weight was night and day. http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/DSC03402.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/DSC03406.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/DSC03403.jpg http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/DSC03404.jpg |
Darn nice
Pretty Slick! I am jealous.

Nice.
If I may, why the can when you have no intentions of shooting subsonics? |

Nothing wrong with that!

Nice! Spook turns all my barrels for me and quite a decent guy as well. Glad it works as well as you hoped!!
|
Yep! Spook does an awesome job. I have built several rifles with his barrels. They all shoot like a house on fire!

Hoser, how bad are the proposed laws going to screw you in CO?

If you decide to move one notch east We'll be glad to have you.:welcome: |
I had this beast out again this weekend. Fun times. I was able to consistently able to smack a 12 inch plate at 600 yards with it shooting Sierra 125s on top of Vhit N-110. No bi-pod or bags. Just off a ruck.
I am starting to like the Sierra 125s more than my old standby Nosler 125s. With the can there is no muzzle flash. Even with the first shot. Granted it is a full size SF. I am guessing a mini might have a little. Shooting accurate rifles, that work, quietly, makes me smile. |
good looking build there Hoser!
|
How hard is it hitting the gong@600?
|
Nothing like a 300 Win Mag, but with a lot more oomph than a 77 Matchking from a 223.
It actually seems to rock the plate more than a 115 gn bullet from my 243 leaving the muzzle at 3,000 fps. I am guessing it has to do with dwell time. |
Nice looking set up!
