50 EBG ,first shots at the range
http://usera.imagecave.com/Spook/FOEBG.jpg Took it to the range this morning (-7 degrees and 35 MPH winds) and fired the five shots on the table just to see ..... I was surprised as to how flat it shot out to 200 or so yds. I'm using almost 24 grains of VVN 110 for whats supposed to be just in excess of 1000 fps.
The idea was to get a 50 cal projectile going 1060 or so without spending a fortune on 510 whisper brass ($4.50 per each) . Recoil wasn't worth mentioning. As soon as the current ice age passes I'll be able to set up the chrony and fine tune the load. |
Thats pretty cool.
I tried to do a search on google for "50 EBG" and got nothing of value. What is the parent case? What action is that? Long action? Thanks |
jjmcrowell, its a cartridge I came up with... neck up 458 SOCOM to 50 cal. I have a 458 and firing subsonic isnt that impressive, bullet selection leaves a little to be desired as well.
The action is a Savage FV action that I milled the bottom out of to facilitate feeding. The barrel blank was by Brux. I had the reamer ground at PTG and the dies were made for me by Hornady. I chambered it for use without the Savage nut in my shop. |
Are you going to suppress it?
|
What's your case capacity like? Comparable to a .50AE maybe? Seeing what you've done and how you explained it, thinking a person could possibly do something similar with an existing cartridge, like .50AE or .50 Beowulf, ect. I say this because this is interesting, but what I have in interest I kind of lack in expierence. Personally I keep going back to the Beowulf 'cause I already have one, sooooo... Thinking maybe I could chamber it up with the existing case with a much larger projectile, ream the chamber to accept the new case length.
Hmmmmm... |
I dont think I'll supress it ....unless I have to  I'll likely install a brake to sort of distort the direction of the sound.
Ream the throat to accept a longer projectile... long heavy bullets in .50 diameter are going to be expensive to come by, This uses milsurp. not saying it cant be done..... depending on the application. |
Well, nothing's cheap these days. Lucky for me I work part time (evenings and weekends) in a gun shop, huh? Gotta love that discount!!

Hows the brass ?
Did they in fact straighten out? how about some pictures of the fired rounds ?
Thanks Dan |
Yep
Dan, they "fluffed" out nicely ...I'll get pics posted soon...
