300 whisper
Just registered 2 minutes ago. Want to hear about personal experiences with 125gr Balistic tips on big midwestern whitetails. I was just given a Bullberry 15" stainless bull barrel for my contender. Shot it for the third time yesterday. First time with fire formed brass and already shoots into an inch or less @ over 2200 fps with 18.5 gr of H-110. With Leupold scope set @ 8X and zeroed a little over 2" high @ 100 yds I can hit 12" steel gongs with every shot @ 256 steps, or approximately 240 yds, by holding just slightly above (approx. 2") the top of the gong. That speaks well of the cartridge and the barrel because I can't shoot pistols well...I'm a rifle guy. What I want to know about is field performance and range limitations of the round. One of my reloading books speaks of that bullet used in a 30/30 contender @ about 200 fps slower (don't know why it would be slower) and it was claimed it killed deer like lightning, but should not be used past 150 yds. The cartridge is a legal round for the entire firearm deer season now in Illinois, and we are sometimes presented with corn field and dry river bed shots in excess of 150 yds, and the development of sabot slugs and the H&R slug gun has taken SOME of my attention away from bow hunting since I can now know EXACTLY where my slug will hit out to 200 yds and what it will do when it gets there. So I'm wondering if the whisper could also fall into that category. The accuracy is obviously there, but what does the bullet do at those velocities? Don't baffle me with a bunch of energy table info please. I've looked it up, but I want to hear real life experiences. My arrow has virtually no energy but kills deer better than any pre-sabot slug ever did for me so I'm a little skeptical about immersing myself in all that energy data. I haven't looked all the way through the site yet so forgive me if the info is already here somewhere. Looking forward to hearing from you all, X

.300 Whisper SIG 551 SWAT
I am the proud owner of a converted SIG 551 SWAT.
Currently I am waiting for some more modifications to be able to use a silencer when I am on holliday with an aquaintance of mine in Switzerland. In the Netherlands I am unfortunately not allowed to own a silencer. The other modification I am waiting for is a different gas tube to be able to fire subsonic .300 Whisper ammo. I will post a photo when my project is done. |
Carbon Fiber AR-.300
I built a lightweight AR carbine using a carbon fiber/Aramid upper/lower reciever, CAR stock, 16" Wilson Arms 1/8 twist barrel, dot sight. Lots of fun, but no can in Iowa!

just got my 300 whisper
waiting on the suppressor to be approved...wow i cant wait..

I just finished putting my second 300-221 together. It all started when I wanted to build a rifle my daughter could shoot. I wanted something that would not have too much kick and that round in an AR sounded like a good combination. I started experimenting with loads for hunting, and found some good accurate loads with 125 gr ballistic tips and 19gr H110, 3/4 inch at a hundred. I really liked the low recoil and good accuracy. Some were asking about reports on how effective it is hunting deer, and I got to take it out last season deer hunting. It turned out my little girl was not ready to shoot yet, but I took the rifle out to test it out. I shot four deer including a 180 lb axis, and they all dropped where they were shot. The distances were 70 to 110 yards. Needless to say, I was impressed. I had been hunting with an '06 for years, and it was a nice change to kill a deer without blowing a big hole and ruining a lot of meat. I took the rifle out again for turkey season this year. The first day, I killed a piglet, and walking back to the camp saw some corsican sheep. I got a good rest and shot. The nice thing about the round is that with the low recoil, I kept sight of the sheep and saw it get hit. I checked the distance later and it was over 150 yards. It had walked about 20 feet and was dead from a heart shot when I got there. The next day, I shot another pig, about 70 lbs, and again it dropped where shot. It was nice that almost no meat was lost due to the shot. We do get some large pigs that show up on occasion, and it will be interesting to see how it performs on the larger animals.

Good report. Thanks.

I am building one on a Zastava Mini Mauser. MAB 1:8 26" barrell. No frills.
I hope that it will arrive next wednesday so I could bring it to the range on sunday. I only have a few cases built from 223. Gosh.. hard work making these cases.. Wish I could buy them.. Gelandangan |
A friend and I built AR-15's in 300 whisper. Haven't had a chance to take either one to the range yet. Trying to decide how we want to build suppressors. Will most likely do them on form 1's or have a class II friend build them.
Need to see what loads each of them likes. One is a model 1 sales upper and the other is from J&T distributing. Both have Essential Arms lowers and DPMS lower parts kits. From what I have been reading on here we need to get either an adjustable gas block, gas tube or move the gas block to the pistol position. We would like both guns to be able to use a suppressor and without along with both types of ammo subsonic and supersonic. |
my whisper
Tikka m55 action, mab 20 inch 1 in 8 twist number 3 barrel. Stock redone in mat tru oil and barrel sprayed with potbelly stove black. Very non reflective firearm.
|
SSK les baer 300 whisper. 11in. 1 in 8 barrel with suppressor. Adjustable gas block. 3-9 leupold for daytime shooting and a aimpoint followed by a PVS-14 night monocular for night work. Various other do-dads such as lights etc. Used to shoot pigs.
Great site. I have a considerable amount of experience with subs and super sonic corbon ammo as well as 125 balistic tips and some other "fancy gimmicks". Do some reloading. Thanks. |
New 300 Whisper
Just put to-gether my first 300 whisper. Sako 75 small action, McMillan stock, 16 1/2" 1x8 twist stainless. I used a new stainless S-7 can from Finland, Its very quiet, I think the bullet hitting the butts makes more noise than the rifle firing. Would post a pic but dont know how.:frown:
I can see lots of work at the loading bench... Rico Laidler CD Military/LE Advisor www.canadiantactical.ca "PEOPLE SLEEP PEACEABLE IN THEIR BEDS AT NIGHT, BECAUSE ROUGH MEN STAND READY TO DO VIOLENT THINGS ON THEIR BEHALF |
I cheaped out, went the easy way. Model 1 Sales 16" A3 upper w/ a 1 in 8 twist mated to a DPMS forged lower. Had it for all of about 3 days now, still need to purchase brass and a set of dies.
edit 06/23/08 reamed the chamber so it would actually chamber a round (Model 1 SUX! ), Leupold 3x9, MagPul MIAD, Hogue carbine length free float tube, low profile gas block, A2 stock, JP adj fire control, and a YHM Phantom supressor. Can't comment on accuracy today because the first trip to the range when Ii was gonna shoot for serious the barrel nut worked loose and my groups looked like buckshot. This Sunday I hope to see its true colors. Running 9.3g H110 under a Hornady 208g A-Max, should chrono at about 1040 or so, I hope. We'll see. edit 08/23/08: the Hornady/H110 load ran it at about 970fps, initail accuracy was REAL bad, but on the third trip to the range all of the sudden it straightened up and started to run at MOA at 100 yards. Worked up another load of AA1680 and 220gn SMK's that chronos right at 1040fps, right where I want to be. Can report on accuracy of it in a later edit. Considering (seriously) building a Rem700 in 300 Whisper, 16"-17" Hart barrel in 1:7. Will fit my YHM can on it too. |
How do you start that process?
Quote:
I know JDJ could make one, he is typically expensive, other options? |
Get in touch with a dealer who may retail supressors. You make the purchase, fill out the form 4 and send it to ATF along with the $200 tax stamp fee. Once approved, typically 3 months, the form will come back to the dealer, he will contact you and you can pick up your supressor.
Or if you have a trust or LLC already you substitute that for the personal info and the wait goes down to a month or less. This is as I understand it a the moment, I'm sure someone who knows the process in greater detail can give you better info. There are a multitude of threads available online in discussion forums such as this one. Some great links are: http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?t=174 http://www.glocktalk.com/showthread....hreadid=199037 http://www.silencertests.com/legality.htm http://www.gem-tech.com/legal.html Copied from SoundTechSilencers: A private citizen may purchase a suppressor directly, BUT, in order to legally receive it he or she will have to work through a Class 3 dealer or Class 2 manufacturer in their state. You will transfer the suppressor to the local dealer through a form 3, approved by BATF, which takes a minimum of 30 days. Once the local dealer receives it, he may then transfer the weapon on a form 4 (which costs $200) to the individual. The dealer usually charges a minimum of $50 for the transfer, which usually takes a minimum of 90 days. You can also look over at AR15.com and subgun.com for waaaay to much info on the subject. I'm setting up a trust as we speak to make the next transfer much smoother. My current SBR permit is taking way too long to come in. |
I am considering purchasing a 300/221 in 1 in 8 for poking holes in paper at 100 to 200 yards at sub sonic velocities. I hear that the recoil is very moderate in an Encore, and the accuracy is outstanding. Any recommendations on where to get a barrel? How about some glass?
|
I went cheapy too....Model 1 upper, DPMS lower. A3 FT,C.A.R. stock, flash supressor, 1-8 twist, I upgraded the grips to the Ergos, got a red dot. I asked for the gas block front site base and they sent me the four sided picatinny one.
Getting the adjustable gas tube, a good 3-9x scope and some other CDI stuff. I was told my LE status would alow me to get a supressor in NY...sounds good, but we'll see. Hillary is still here....... Mod 1 kit w/ upgrades.........$549.00 DPMS lower w/ tax..............$135.00 Dies from Redding................$62.00 Brass, powder, bullets, etc....gun store regulars All in all not bad. Had a good travel check from Uncle Sam...covered it all. |
300-221
In the process of building a custom gas-piston 300 now. Will post results and picks as steps are completed. Going to be using a Magpul CTR stock and Miad grip, GG&G flip up sights, Eotech 552 with mount from GG&G.

Greetings from Finland!
I recently finished my .300-221 AR15 build. http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/3157...1_Cal_AR15.JPG Test rounds were loaded to cases made from .221 Rem cases with Redding dies. On first test bullet was molycoated 220 grs SMK on top of 12 grs N120 and CCI small rifle primers. Accuracy was fairly good (5 shots/18mmC-C@50meters) but there was still some room for improvement as load was still supersonic. Velocity was not measured but one can sure tell difference between super and subsonic... Second test rounds were loaded with same components but now with 11.5 grs of N120. Average velocity was 320 m/s but this time accuracy was not tested. On next test I'll drop powder charge maybe 0.1-0.2 grains to get some safety margin to keep velocities well in subsonic territory. Other possible step in load development is to use N110 powder but I'm not sure if it's necessary. Barrel is custom made by Finnish gunsmith from Lothar-Walther .30-8" stainless blank. Reamer came from PTG. Gas system is is pistol length and barrel length is 420mm to keep gun within rifle dimensions according to local legislation. Silencer in picture above is BR-reflex suppressor. This forum has been very useful during my build project so I thought it's time to share the outcome of my project with you. |

Just put together my first whisper yesterday. I have built a few AR15s but decided to branch out. So I cannibalized an old XM177 clone I had, dropped a M1S barrel on it and now I have a 16" .300 whisper carbine. Nothing special, just an A2 type recievers, A2 stock and CAR handguards but when I took it to the range it displayed a lot of potential for accuracy. Now to just get it to cycle properly
22May08 Got it cycling fine, accuracy is good with subsonics and it looks like Missouri will be allowing suppressors soon. Life is good. |
I have a M1S 300 Fireball upper, but it doesn't cycle properly as of right now.

I'm more than a little ashamed to say that I joined this great forum back in March of 2007 in anticipation of beginning a 300 whisper SBR build and never posted....:o
Recently picked this project back up and need to get back up to speed. Lots of great information here! No pictures yet but I'm almost there, final specs will be something like this: SSK upper with 11.5" bull barrel (1:8 twist) AAC Cyclone suppressor Stag lower Magpul PRS stock YHM Rifle length light weight free float rail |
New Here, but not to the Whisper
I'm new to the forum but I've been shooting the Whispers for years. Currently have a .300/.221 Fireball AR, a Remington 700 that I built with a .300 Whisper reamer on a Shilen Match 1in 8 twist blank, and a Custom Shop TC Contender in .300 Whisper.
I am using a Form 1 Suppressor that I built. On the Rem, I get 3/8 groups at 100 yards using 8.2 grains of AA#5 using a 220 Sierra BTMHP. Thats my favorite gun for the .300, it is very quiet and deadly accurate. For those that recognize the name, I am a moderator on the Defensive Carry.com forum which is geared to concealed weapons carriers around the country. Hope to get some good info here. Whispers are one of my passions. |
Sounding off
Hello,
I just built my first .300 whisper. It's my fourth AR build. It has a 16" bbl from model 1 sales. The only load I've tried so far is with win 296 and 180GRN bullets. It really didn't work well. It wouldn't lock the bolt back, and I had one blown primer. I'm thinking the powder may be too fast with my gas port being in the carbine position, but I don't know. Other factors may be the one piece gas ring I use in my guns. They some times take a little time to wear in and funtion properly. Also I hate the Spring noise on AR's so I added grease to the buffer assy. Anyway, I'm glad I found this site and will be doing a lot of reading to try and figure this out. I'd really like to find a load using powder I have on hand, especially W296 or maybe IMR 4831. To make a short post long  HELLO |
9mm can
I have a ? can you shoot 300 whisper using a 9mm can.I'm shooting 210smk 10.4 aa1680 @ 975/1020 fps.I'm using 30cal. can now on my bolt gun that i set up in 300 whisper.

Gotta new fire stik, cant wait to shoot it!!!
I live on a high fence ranch with a 13 acre lake that is surrounded by random home owners, many in a retirement community. It's fairly rural, Deer EVERY WERE, turkeys, fox, ducks, swans, miss. varmint and pigs. I have had the law called (they were very understanding and polite,) because of people being startled by "HIGH POWERED RIFLES BEING SHOT REALLY CLOSE TO THERE HOMES!!" this is not all true. The pigs love all the limestone valleys around the property and they cause the report sound waves to be directed strait up towards 2 homes. My ar15 is quite loud and...I like to shot it...So I got a 300 whisper barrel. I'm in love with the ideal of it and have yet to explore it!!!!:uzi2:
I'm planning on mounting my Trijicon 6x48MGO on an older style MGI with an Eotech 552 on the Trij. The Trij will be sighted in for my 223 1-9twist barrel and the Eotech sighted for my 221 1-8twist Fireball barrel. With any luck I will be able to get some brass made/purchased soon and work up some sub loads. Still don't have a Can for the 300 221 barrel, working on it. Would like to get an adapter made for it that allows me to use the same Can for 308. Don't know if i can wait for it to be manufactured!!! |
Newbie to Whisper
I live in the country on 80 acres ... but neighbors are much closer than they used to be. I have to be much more cautious about shooting that I once was. The big rifles (9,3x62 to .458 AR) are LOUD and tend to rattle windows a long way away.
Have been a handloader and bullet caster for more than 40 years. Making arrangements to have a 1 in 8 twist 16+" barrel built with an adjustable gas block in the pistol position, a flat top upper, and a free floating handguard. Will be a pretty heavy bbl (1" behind the gas block and .750" in front of the gas block). Hope to be able to afford an SAS Titanium suppressor next year maybe. Have dies and am playing with making brass from 5.56 LC brass. Looking forward to playing with a "little gun" and then a quiet gun for a change. Really appreciate the information available on this forum. Thanks Guys! |
I just recently got my 300 built! I am using a custom made 8.5" Bartlein bbl that my brother chambered. pistol gas system with an adjustable gas block from tp555. LaRue 7.0 handguard and an SAS 30 cal suppressor.
making the LaRue handguard jive with tp555's gasblock was NOT fun. I had to grind the sharp corners off of the gasblock and totally dissassemble the block. I then had to do surgery on the handguard and remove some material. Assemble upper and slide the gasblock into place and reassemble it in place. All in all it was worth it (I got what I wanted) .. but I aint rushing to do that again! |
New member, experienced 300 Whisper shooter
Greetings all!
I guess I've been lurking here long enough and it is time to now make a post! I've been shooting the 300 Whisper (subsonic) from a 10-3/4" T/C for several years now in IHMSA. It won me a couple State and International Big Bore trophies. It's one hell of a good Big Bore round! I've been handloading for almost 10 years now for conventional & several wildcat calibers for IHMSA and benchrest work on a Lyman turret press and as an IDPA shooter produce prolific amounts of 9, 40 & 45 rounds on a progressive press. Over the last couple of years I've gotten BRD (Black Rifle Disease) and have built a couple and bought an RRA Varmint A4 as a bench gun and it has done an amazing job at making small groups. I am FINALLY able to get one of JD Jones's 300 Whisper uppers. I met with JD two weeks ago and now have a custom 300 W upper on order! I'm building a RRA lower with the national match trigger group for it. I haven't quite decided what type of glass I'm going to put on it, but do want a tactical optic in the 3 to 10 or 12x range. Likely will go with a 30mm tube and mil-dot reticule to take advantage of the higher level of elevation adjustment the Whisper needs when using both subsonic and supersonic rounds. I very much look forward to contributing my experience to our group here with the Whisper upper and can't wait to see what kind of loads I come up with and how small a group it will print for me both in sub and supersonic modes! Advice on any facet of my new adventure is greatly welcome & appreciated. Thank you! Best regards, Dino |
I have been a gunsmith for over 25 years and have been watching this forum for a while now. I have been playing with subsonic rifle rounds for about a two years whenever I have a couple of minutes here and there. I have just started to introduce a new line of custom rifles called the Thumper line. They are all based on the K.I.S.S. principle. The first one we are producing is the 50 Thumper built on a Remington 700. We will be coming out with the .338 Thumper shortly which will be based on an AR platform. The 50 Thumper is desititing on Hogs. You can see the 50 Thumper on our website and we will have the 338 Thumper up shortly.

New to 300 Whisper
Just got my first Whisper yesterday, built by Kelly Kyle in Oklahoma.
Topped with new SuperSniper 10X HD (for now) and suppressed with YHM 7.62 Phantom. Reloading tomorrow (220-gr SMK over various charges of #7, shooting subsonic.) Range report to follow. I'll be looking around on the forum for favorite recipes. |
I just picked up a 10.5" bbl from tp555 a couple of weeks ago. This is a SBR AR build for my wife. I'd been using a 6.8spc loaded w/150gr SP's & AA#9 for subs, but cycling was so-so and I was key holing pretty badly at 100yrds. I decided I'd pick up a whisper and give it a shot for her instead. I'm just waiting on a stamp so I can starting building her can. Until then, I'll just use my HVT and see what I can come up with.
|
I currently have a Model 1 Sales upper for my AR (and am still trying to work up a suitable subsonic load for it). I also have a Remington 700 that I will be building up as soon as my McGowan barrel gets here. I'm going to assume there's no real need to make the barrel longer than 20 inches? I also have a Howa 1500 that I may convert later on (if I can get metric change gears for my lathe). I have also finally obtained a TC Contender, and will be shopping for barrels for it.
