Pre-Patent BUCK 184 put together wrong?

These photos show a pre-patent BUCK 184 I recently bought. I was looking at it with my daughter and she noticed that the hand guard was upside down as compaired with my other 184's. I unscrewed the but cap to see if this was a knife someone may have taken apart, but it looks like this is a factory mistake?
I also cleaned what I believed to have been Yelow Zinc Chromate primer off of the handle leading me to believe this could have been used by someone in the service?
I would be interested in any thoughts.
