I just aquired an Atlas metal lathe man around 1940 to 1950. Runs great have turned some brass butt caps for knives with the previous owners help. The questions I have are:
1) Is there a tool rest made for turning wood and if so where can I find one?
2) I was told the the part that engages the auto drive (I think that is what it is called) is missing where can I find one?
3) I would like to bore some damascus what drill bit would you suggest? I use a paddle bit when I drill holes for knife handles but the bits are shorter than standard drill bits.

Thank you for your help William

Do you know the model/size of your lathe? If not look around here http://www.lathes.co.uk/atlas/index.html Ebay is the place for parts. I have a card in my shop from an Atlas parts guy. Some parts are still avail from http://clausingsc.com/sc-home.htm The rest can be fabbed pretty easy from steel. I prob can build you one if you can't do it or find a ready made one...Bob

Thanks for the tips metalmaster. As you can tell I am new to lathe work but have been blacksmithing for a while. What type of drill bit would you use to bore out damascus? (I saw some ink pens made from damascus selling for big bucks ata knife show and would like to try my hand) I make my own damascus using 1095 and lumber mill band saw blades. William
