Some years ago I acquired a 184 from a tool maker that worked at Buck in El Cahon CA. It is brightly polished and does not have the frontal scallops on blades forward top. Could this have been a proto type of the earlier model? It Is the three line model that appears "engraved" in a thin line not stamped heavy like others I've seen but still says Buck

Bill Porter may have a better answer for you but what you are describing does sound line some of the Prototypes I have seen. I have also seen Custom Shop Buckmasters that are similar to what you are describing.
CAN YOU POST PHOTOS?

Could be a prototype, but I doubt it. Buck didn't develope the Buckmaster, Mickey Finn did. Any original prototype would have been made by Mickey Finn, not Buck. Buck did make special order 184s in their Custom Knife Shop. Maybe it's one of these. Can you post some pictures?
