Welcome to the new knife forums. My name is Quarterbore but a few people that don't know me call me Ken. I am just an average guy with three kids, a wife, dog and ex-wife. I am really not all that much of a knife expert but close to ten years ago I tried to put together a summary of what I knew about the Buck-184 Buckmaster and the M9 bayonet and I put the info up on my simple hobby page www.Quarterbore.com (http://www.quarterbore.com/).

Over the years that simple little page grew and I got e-mails from a great many people that have contributed to my own knowledge and I really have to give a great deal of credit to Bill Porter and Doug Houser for countless corrections and pieces of information that has been included on the site. My website had got pretty large as my ever expanding "bad habbits" got included on the website and after a while I had problems because I couldn't get affiliate programs to approve my site because they didn't like... Guns, Knives, Cars, Girls, or Who the hell knows what... This lead me to split off the content off Quarterbore.com into as many as twenty small niche websites including www.M9Bayonet.com (http://www.m9bayonet.com/) and www.Buck-184.com (http://www.buck-184.com/) .

The Niche websites were working fine but in order for me to afford to pay for the hosting of all these websites I needed to find the cheapest host I could get. Well, cheap was not the way to go as I had very little tools to back up my websites especially my databases that are so critical to keeping a forum online. This new forum is going to become the central discussion area that will support many of my small websites and I will have to see what becomes of my small websites if I move all the forums here!

As for my own knife collection, I think I have about three Buck-184 Buckmasters, one Buck-185 Buckmaster, four M9 Bayonets, and perhaps a couple M7s. I also have quite a few other bayonets including AK-47 and FNFAL bayonets plus a bayonet for my UZI. I do have other knives including a Phrobis MFK and may other knives that are rather ordinary but since I have been hanging out with you all I have got the bug and I have been adding samples of lots of different knives.

Well, that is more about me then anybody would really want to know... who are you... how did you find us... what are your interests... what should I add to these forums?

I am a long time bayonet collector who does not specialise in a particualr area, time or country. For years i stayed away from the M9 and it was not until i bought a BCN commemerative M9 that the bug caught, since then i have added several, though nothing on par with the serious collectors, i was slowly building up information to put together a dedicated M9 page with my meagre collection and information i had gathered, then i found this site and will let Quaterbore do all the hard work ;) . I am here more to get info than add much i think, as there are people like Ken and Bill who know a lot more than me, but i ope to learn more about a collectable blade.

The rest of my collection including special pages 9many produced with the help of other collectors) on the AK blades, the Austrian 1895, Czech VZ's, Chassepots etc can be seen on my web site,

Bayonetman
05-21-2005, 09:25 PM
My name is actually Gary Cunningham, and I chose Bayonetman as my Ebay screen name when they began using them, and it has sort of stuck. I am a student and collector of US military bayonets with an emphasis on the Model 1905 and M1 bayonets.

I started out collecting Civil War arms and accouterments with the encouragement of my scoutmaster back in the mid-1950s. For years I collected practically anything connected with the US Infantryman, but a number of financial problems finally caused me to sell most of the non-edged part of the collection. I continued to collect the bayonets, and to a more limited extent other US edged weapons and tools. My reference collection currently has about 150 bayonets, although of course a large percent are simply marking variations (I have 23 M1 bayonets).

The reasons I decided to stay with bayonet collecting was (1) They are reasonably plentiful with a lot of variations, (2) They don't take up a great deal of space, (3) They are not normally subject to as many laws and regulations as firearms, and (4) They were relatively cheap. Reason 4 has changed a lot in the last 5-10 years, and some bayonets now bring as much or more as the firearms they were made to fit.

I was encouraged by a couple of friends to revise my bayonet notebook and put it in book form. I was out of work for some time due to health reasons so I had some time to spend putting everything together, and in 1997 Scott Duff was kind enough to publish the book, titled American Military Bayonets of the 20th Century. I also write a column called Bayonet Points on Frank Trzaska's website www.usmilitaryknives.com. Many people have been kind enough to contact me with information, from single facts to large bodies of information. My goal is to pass this on to other collectors in hopes that I can add somewhat to the body of knowledge on the subject. I certainly don't know it all, and am always glad to hear from other collectors who wish to share their knowledge.

Hello All,
My name is Dave and I live here on the west coast in Portland Oregon.
I am 53 years old and a long time Gun Enthusiast/Collector.
I own half a dozen AR's in various configurations.
Recently Joined this Chat board in hopes of getting some input to
resolve a problem I have been having with an OA-93 pistol upper.

This firearm would not cycle reliably when I first got it.
Experimented with many different types of ammo and found that
only the Federal Lake City Brown box would cycle more or less reliably.
None of the ammo tested would Lock the action open after the last round.
Emailed Olympic's Support people and never received an answer.

So now I am on my own. Dissassembled the Upper and found the following.
The Gas port was set at .0625" (1/16) and it had the straight gas tube.
The recoil spring seemed way too stiff. It's dimensions were as follows:
OD=.440" OAL=7.5" Wire Dia.=.047" Coil Pitch=.1875

Opened the Gas Port just slightly to .070" and added a pigtail Gas tube.

I have Inquired all around and spent Hours searching the web to find a
spring with a little softer rate and have had no luck.

So I started cutting off coils and retesting, I now have a spring that is
just barely 6.0" long. The Federal Lake City ammo now reliably Locks
the action open every time. The other ammo now cycles But they
will not Lock the action open.

At least now the OA-93 functions, But it is not the optimum situation.
I would still like to find a spring that will allow a wider variety of ammo to be
used while still functioning correctly.

Anyone that has any thoughts on this subject please respond.

Dave

My name is Tim Watt. I'm just starting my m9 collection. (only have 2 right now). My first m9 is a Buck 188/ that I bought in the early 90's while in the Navy. I never carried it, just admired it. I caught the bug even back then. Most of my collection of knives is based on the modern military. Bayonets and regular carry fixed blades. I am also an amatuer bladesmith. The form and function of the m9 facinates me for some unknown reason. Most of the reason I joined this site is for information. I really don't have much to contribute yet.

Hello All. I'm Dallas from central Virginia. While I've been collecting firearms for some years, I've just recently started to collect knives and a few bayonets. I've decided that guns and knives are a natural together. I'm guessing some of you may share that opinion. I'm hoping to learn a few things here.

If you look at Quarterbore's Knight's SR-25K site, you'll see one of my rifles. Once I figure out where to post it, I'll post a few photos of my one and only M9 bayonet. Stay tuned....

G"Day from SE Queensland here in Australia. I signed up with this forum back in January, and then forgot about it! Go figure. My name is Wes, and I have been collecting bayonets since I was a kid back in the late 1960's. I collect bayonets from the Boer War period to the present with about 200 specimens overall.

I grew up on the wheatfields of Saskatchewan in western Canada, served almost 20yrs in the Canadian Army before immigrating to Australia over 10 yrs back. Lived in Sydney for many years and was at various units there before taking a posting in Queensland, about 1200km north of Sydney. Great place, live on an island www.bribie.com.au only 125 steps from the doorstep to water's edge. Good diving, and great surfing here along the coast of the Coral Sea.

I am currently a member of the ADF in the Corps of RAEME, and in the past was invloved in rebuilds of wpns and eqpt, so hence where I get my knowledge of Aussie materiel from.

I look forward to posting more on here as time permits.

Cheers,

My hanlde is gunnut1. Most of the gun boards I bvelong to just call me 'Nut. It fits!

I admired the Buck 184 back in the 80s when they frist came out. I had no used for them then. I now live in Colorado and suddenly I realize theat I need a survival knife. Ih ave a Lan-Cay M9 in OD and I just bought a 184 copy that is made in Tiawan. I know I know. The copies are not as good as the orginals. But this one seems to be OK. It looks and feels like a 184. The steel seems to be OK. It is sharp right out of the box.

I would love to have an orginal 184 but they are a little steep for my pocket book and that is why I ended up with the copy.

Ihave quite a collection of bayonets but I am not an avid knife or bayonet collector.

Looking forward to reading and learning on the board!

Hello all,

I've seen a lot of Quarterbore's posts on various sites, but never got around to this board.

A little about me... I recently completed a .45ACP conversion on an AK-47 (more on that later if anyone is interested). I've started acquiring more "older" rifles to offset the number of AK type kits that I've bought recently, including an M1 Garand, a Russian capture Mauser, and an Enfield #4 Mk1/2.

Hello,

I'm not really a new member, but have never really introduced myself. My name is Joel Ripper. I'm a Probation Officer in central Illinois. I am a former Police Officer, and still am a part time firearms instructor at the Univeristy of Illinois Police Training Institute.

I'm an active IPSC/USPSA competitor, deer hunter, and certified gun nut. I found this forum originally because I like the AR 15 platform, but am not thrilled with the performance of the .223. I ran accross the .300 whisper, and then this forum. Most of my experience is with 1911 and Glock pistols, but also like playing with military rifles.

Just wanted to introduce myself. I am long time knife user. I do not collect.

I have wanted a Buck 184 since the first time I saw one when I was 8 years old (1988). I am now 25 and I came across one online for 13.99 so I snatched it up in a heart beat.

I have found this site to be very informative, many thanks to Quarterbore for puting it together. Hopefully you all can help me with some questions I have about my 184.

Thanks,
Matt

Hello, I'm Fatstrat. Many of you may recognize my "handle" as a type of guitar. You are correct, I play guitar, but not very well.
Growing up, my younger brother and I both liked knives. Over the years we both had/lost alot of them.
Recently my folks found a box of knives that had belonged to us. Some of them I remember, and some that were possibly my brothers, I don't. Apparently the folks just collected the knives they found laying about. All of these knives will likely be at least 30 yrs old.
While I have ordered a knife collectors book to try to ID some of these knives and thier possible values, I've come here to see what info might be gained as well. Thanks in advance for any helpful info. Fatstrat

I have a passion for knives and find myself looking for the battlefield 2 knife about 2 weeks ago. Upon discovering the M9 bayonet, I dug deeper to find out which ones are of better quality and which ones are the real thing. The more I dig, the more interesting the M9 becomes. I have a feeling I'll be picking a few of these up for my collection.

Just a thought, a nice thread to have would be a history M9 sales from e-bay
thread. Posting past M9 sales so people can see what these knives are going for and how often the different models appear up for auction.

Hi

I found this site doing some searching for a few Buck type knives I have. I spent a good deal of time at the Oceanside pawn shop owned by Harry Camphuysen (sp?) chatting with the fellas and ended up buying an early BuckMaster and a prototype Buck Titanium (as well as a bunch of other stuff).

I'm retired from the Navy now (been so for 14 years) but I still work for the government on the Naval Hospital Bethesda, MD compound.

I shoot a good bit and have a few knives.

Hi. love guns of all types; knives, othr weapons, etc. learning about surplus, interested in eventually making knives. also into self defense, etc. Love to know how to do it all myself; woodscraft, etc. have bought knives and guns for many years, no big collection, just variety, etc.
thinking of reducing the number and variety and going for exceptional quality, users. all of a sudden not as interested in the variety cause i only own them but do not use them all. example : 3 double barrels ... ruger .270 #1 and 7 rem mag and always use same shotgun and same rifle; same with the knives, have different blade shapes, and sizes and actually use very few, though use more different nives than hunting rifles.
found the site looking for extremely accurate arms, considering military / police / varmint type weapons semi or bolt or single shot. found the site informative and the folks experienced. Love it.

Hello everyone. Just checking in here. I live in south central PA. 12 year U.S. Army Veteran. I served with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Operation Desert Storm (my avatar is the 2D ACR patch). I carried my issued M7 during Desert Storm. That was the first time that bayonet had been out of my Troop's arms room in one hell of a long time. It was not until I got stateside again in 1992, with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment that I actually got issued a M9. I had to turn that one back in when I left the Regiment. Been out of the service since '96. I am new to the M9 addiction, but am a long time FALcaholic. There seems to be a great bunch of folks here and a vast wealth of information.

Hello All,
I'm LT from West By God Virginia. I have been interested in knives and bayonnets from an early age. I just started collecting in earnest. I recently bought 3 Buckmaster 184's. (Pre-patent, blood grooved and I guess regular) I am a US Army Vet. Afghanistan and Iraq x 2. I was looking for information on the Buckmaster and other knives when I found this site. Thanks for hosting it, and I hope to get to know several of you well. LT

My name is Bill and I use the name K75thranger in honor of my brother Frank who was KIA on July 8th, 1969 serving as a sniper with the 4th Infantry Division assigned to the 75th Rangers K Company. I have been collecting M-7 bayonets for about six years now. I only specialize in collecting the different variations of the M-7. I currently have 103 different types of M-7's, from the green handled Colt's (all three types), to the recent Chinese M-7's (in order to fit the AR-15 the crossguard ring has to be bored out). I have German, Belgium, Pananmanian, Thailand, Indonesian,Phillipino,Canadian,Australian, Israeli, North Korean, and South Korean variations. I have all the US manufactorers...BOC, COLT, CONETTA, FZR, GEN CUT, IMPERIAL, MILPAR, MIL-TEC, ONTARIO, and TAC. I was even lucky enough to get a Product Improved variation from the Army Ranger test trials in 1975 (number 33). I also have three of the Imperial Vietnam War Commemortive bayonets (US ARMY, USMC, and US AIR FORCE. If anyone has the US Navy variation in it's original presentation case, I would be happy to purchase it from you. Also any variations that you may have to add to my collection I would be interested in. If you have any questions about M-7's, feel free to ask, if I don't know I will find out for you

I just talked to a friend & fellow collector whom mentioned the M9 QB site to me. Then I recalled joining back in April, 2005 (but forgot all about it & had not logged in since!). Anyway, I see it has expanded quite a bit since those first members joined, and I will look forward to reviewing the many posts submitted since then.
My interest in M9s began about four years ago, although I had been aware of this bayonet system since the late 1980s. Initial reaction to seeing my first M9 back then was pretty negative. Having served three years in the USMC, I thought running around with such a bayonet like that (as opposed to the M7 I was issued), would have been like having a brick hanging from one's utility belt! I also remembered reading about the adoption of this bayonet by the U.S. Army, & how some politicians were bemoaning the fact it was too expensive a proposition.
In the 1990's while at the Great Western militaria show I saw Mr. Finn's big "product board", with M9s & other bayonet/knives he had for sale, but my interests lied elsewhere. In any event, about four years back, I picked up a used Phrobis "4-line" at a local swapmeet for $25.00. Somehow it seemed more appealing to me than in the past. Whatever the effect, it appears to have taken hold. Though I later upgraded that first example, there are plenty more which I have added since (some at a substantial increase in price, too!).

Hi. My name is Dan, and I make Handmade Military Combat knives .
I use a tri A symetrical grind inspired by the original Probis M9 Bayonet, which next to what I make is my favorite knife. The design is ingenious, and although many of todays knifemakers would say me wrong about that,
it is simply because they have never studied the knife.

I've been doing this for the past almost 12 years now.
Before that I was a law enforcement officer, for 20 years. I also during that time had a part time business selling machine guns to police depts.
I have a web site, http://www.relentlessknives.com and do a Support Our Troops program (http://www.relentlesknives.com/support.html) every year which includes sending knives to our men and women in harms way in Iraq and Afg.
I was invited here by a member Mr. Moon, who is a knife collector.....no, a
passionate M9 bayonet enthusiast, who I met, as he literally searched the world from his computer day and night for over a year in relentless persuit of an M9 Clear.
Although I have never had the pleasure of a personal meeting with Mr Moon, his Great interest and enthusiasim could not be over looked, and I'm proud to be a friend of his.
That's it.
Thanks for allowing me a space in your community, I look forward to being an asset here.

Hi folks; My real name's Craig Butler, I hail from the west coast of Canada (Vancouver). I call myself 427Rat cause I'm a bit of an auto nut with a special fondness for big blocks.
My other interests include leather work, guitar playing (70's rock, jazz, blues, swing, big band) audio, video, guns, muscle cars and motorcycles. Living in Canada I cant really indulge a lot in fire arms. I'm into knives but I wouldnt call myself a collector, i dont have walls of them but whenever I find one that strikes me I grab it. I like the outdoors and 'roughing it' on week-ends usually looking for gold.
I found this forum while I was looking into the availability of Buckmasters (good luck:rolleyes: ) I see some of the members here had the foresight to grab them when they were available, oh well I'll enjoy looking at them. Well thats about it, Ive done a bit of looking and I can already see this is a well learned forum and I'm looking forward to learning a lot.

Hello to all. My name is James. I have only one Buckmaster 184 U.S.A. that I got in 84'-85' from a soldier station at Ft. Bragg. My cousin was in the 82nd. His friend needed cash so I got it for $50. My mom was not sure about it but with some sweet talking I got it. I'm not a big collector but have afew. This place has a great deal of info. Just found it looking for info on my buck 184.

Dear All,

What a great and informative site! This is my first post, so this may seem to be a dim-witted question and for that I apologize.

I have done some research on an M7 that I just now bought used. It was made by Imperial, and that is about all I know about it.

Everywhere I look the handle is described as "plastic" which is pretty obvious, but I am wondering exactly what type? I'm about 99% sure it is Bakelite based on a quick test I did, but I wanted to check.

Separately, and this may be useless info., but in case it is not, I thought I'd pass it along.

In addition to the used, surplus M7 I described above, Cheaperthandirt.com also has new, military surplus M7's available in original packaging. I ordered and received one and it is as advertised - I was very pleased. The options are:

M7 in original wrapping manufactured in 1974 for $69.97; and

M7 in original wrapping manufactured between 1988 and 1989 (this is what I bought). The price is $59.97

Lastly, the used M7 came from Cheaper than dirt as well, costing $29.97 including scabbard. The condition on the website is described as "Used Fair," but mine would more accurately described as "Used, Fairly poor." This is because of all the numbers ground in to the knife and sheath to identify it, along with the sharpie marker and plastic stickers. However, the bayo itself did take a nice edge - it is tough to beat 1095 steel.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Hello guys!
I'm tyler from New Jersey. While I've been collecting firearms for some years, I've just recently started to collect knives, and few bayonets. Then I've decided to collect compass to complete my tools. Then one my friend introduce button compass (http://www.survival-gear.com/button-compass.htm) to add on my collection. What do think? I'm guessing some of you may share that opinion. I'm hoping to learn a few things here.

thanks!

Hello all,
New to the M9 community but not to knives. I have several Randalls, Martins, Custom Damascus fixed and folders, Autos, Ivory handles, Gerber's, benchmades, Kershaws, etc... I carried a Gerber Patriot on my Flight Vest when I was a flight engineer in Bco 3/160th S.O.A.R.(A) during the early to mid 90's.

Just bought a 1st gen early production LanClay with the blood groove for collectability and plan on getting a standard one for my m4. Now I want a Special ops commemorative since I was a part of Socom back in the day.

Hope to see you on the "boards"

Hey Guys,
I've know about the whisper for a while, my dad has been a varmit hunter for all his life. I'm into various things, military style guns being one of them. I recently decided to pull the trigger on the purchase of an old select fire AR15. I first looked at SSK high quality products, though I came to the conclusion I may do better DIYing it(could be wrong).I found out Randall at ar15barrels.com is not taking orders. The only unit I could find is a 16" unit at ar15products.net. I plan on using a Gemtech HVT (9.22") as it (suppresses) the most bang for the buck form what data I could scour off the net. I would like to keep the overall length under 20" preferably 16". I would also like to use a one of the new Colt or LMT Monolithic uppers machined, if necessary, to have a nice transition from handguard to can. I've given up searching on ar15.com as the minute wait between searches is maddening and there isn't much there about the Whisper anyhow. Any info from you guys running select fire, suppressors, especially Mr. Jones' stuff, I'd love to hear from. Also looking for soucres for barrels and opinion on supressors. I found a lot of good info on silencerresearch.com but nothing on the SSK units or the .300 whisper unfortunately.

Thanks,
Jay

New member here --- been reading the forum as a guest for some time, figured i should finally register and contribute. I live in Texas and have been collecting knives, firearms and various survival, tactical and military gear since I was a kid as a compliment to my love of the outdoors.

I trend toward rugged production knives as I like to use what I "collect" so you'll see more posts from my about how many trees I've felled with a Gerber BMF than you will about how many customs I have sitting in a display case.

I've also started blogging some gear reviews in recent weeks....you can check my blog out here: http://mcpgearblog.blogspot.com/

Say Heah, Quarterbore and Freinds, Let me start by telling you what knives I have, and you will see that ""I'm. Crazy and average guy" her I go...in the late 70's early 80's I bought a knife from a sportingood store that was gooing out of busssiness. I never heard of Cold Steel before then. Since - only had buck's and sharades knives that I could buy from K-marts, uncle bills etc. Well anyhow the knife turnedb out to bbe a san mai trailmaster, the choi is shorter then the new ones and has a tooth or like a nipple which I like better. I feel that design looks stronger then the new ones. The homogoricly grind is much better then my new natchez, it is japaneses made the natcches is not. Then I found out 9.4. And started collecting carbonV's. But before alll this the Sylvester Stalone craze and the "Rambo Knives" caught my eye so I went out looking for one. Only to find a Buckmaster 184 . Back to Cold Steel Knives, I have the loradoN 2 recon scouts, rec0on tando, trailmaster, oda, and asrk these knives are all in carbonV's my natches and original trailmaster are san mai3's. I have a bounch of frost cutlery pocket knives with stag and pearl handles. I also have the vaquero in a vg-1 by C.S. A talwar and black sable in san mai, a black rhino and a rajah1 in AUS8 ,then I have german solingin steel like a boker' edge, weidmannshei this one is a 3 1/2 clip point, then I have a canaduan bellt knife by him also. Then I met a patient of mine tthat worked for ford and he made me a knife add thatt to my knives, then I have a k-bar and a camillus k-bar I suspect its a cabonV since they made the steel for C.S. For them. Finally I have troophy stags in damascus a benchmade 16, annd gerber silver trident bouble serrateded blade in a 154cm a sog elite trident 2.0 a crkt. Ultina a 1
W.w2 theather knife.N and finalll$y a onterio magnum stealth and a old weestern knife and ax combo... If I think of more I will ammend this...nice to meet y'all and G B Y'all...paul but my friends calle me paulie

Hello everyone, I"m Wulf (my real name is William, however most people online and in real life call me Wulf). I'm an amateur collector and have been collecting knives of all kinds since i was about 6. I mainly have focused on Victoronox (swiss army knives), bayonets and hunting sheath knives. Aside from that I am a disabled son of a Vietnam vet, and when i'm not playing with a knife of some sort i'm usually working on a firearm, pc or playing my 360.

I don't have any specific focus on the knives that I collect (tho these days I focus on quality first) the few that I can be proud of is my Buck 184 (i believe i traced it back to being made in 1985) a small handful of bayonets my father brought back from Vietnam. If you've any questions I'll do all I can to answer them

I am Mike, a 32yr old guy from West Virginia that up till a few weeks ago knew little to nothing about bayonets other than they went on a gun and stabbed things. I found this place because my boss is a buy/reseller of surplus stuff and has a metric buttload of M7s, M9s, and OKC3s'. Found this sight while trying to do research to figure out the value of all these blades and this place has proved a priceless resource. And I am sure over the coming weeks I will probably be bugging some of you all trying to find the information I need to keep the bossman happy :)

I´m also interested in "modern" fighting-, and, utility -knives.

My English isn´t that proper, so, sorry, in advance ... :o

Best,

R.

I have a friend that uses the same handle on another forum, Welcome.

I've been a lurker here until just recently, but have long been active in several other forums. My main focus area is bayonets. I'm not specialized on one country, era, or type, but am more of a generalist. The info here on the M7 and M9 bayonets is some of the best around.

Best Regards,

Ralph E. Cobb

Long time lurker and have used this excellent forum for research about both the M9 and the BUCK 184.
Finally deceided to register, as I stumbled over both blades and bought them in an okay deal.
Fantastic to hold the 184 after decades of longing to own one.
Quite like the M9 too.
