Years ago I was a Canadian licensed gunsmith playing around with GENUINE DUTCH AR 10 rifles and GENUINE USGI M-14 rifles. I also built a few dozen AR 15 rifles, mostly serious target types. At that time I had no real use for the AR 15's ... nothing wrong with the guns [ gotta like the AR 10's little brother ] but I had no use for .223.
Why yap like a poodle when you can BARK like a big dog??
Anyhow, a couple of decades later, I decide to get back into guns as a hobby. While looking around for which NEW AR 10 Clone to play with, I stumble across all sorts of delightful AR 15 things like .300 Whisper, .50 Beuwulf, and on and on. Finally, an AR 15 I could respect .... gotta like it when the mouse guns now BARK in .300Whatwathat? or .458 Socool or .50BigWulf.
So, I just bought two Oly .300 Whisper barrels. Neat .... these are their newest design, with the gas port at the pistol location, and a MASSIVE port. Like most of Oly's stuff, these are fine looking kit. Mounted one barrel on a Flat Top Oly upper, with Oly RIFLE length quad rail, Eotech, Vortex flash hider, etc. Lower will NOT have a slider stock ... sticking with full length ACE or YHM for reliability and handling.
Still haven't sourced any ammo, but working on that next [ Corbon can't sell to Canada ... bah humbug! ] I swore a holy oath NEVER to reload again ... but what the heck?
Anyhow, as a Canuck ex-gunsmith, along the way I've come across a few things that might not be too common south side of the border. For example, I picked up three boxes of Lapua SUB-sonic .308 Win ammo from a Canuck Conservation Officer, who uses this stuff to shoot critters in populated areas.
Mostly used on harbor seals, and from what the CO says, it is quite quiet even without a suppressor. I held on to it for a few years, intending to get into sub-sonic .308 Win myself, but after discovering .300 Whisper, am giving up on that idea. For sub-sonic ballistics, the Whisper just makes so much more sense than downloading the .308 Win.
Looking forward to more chatting ... especially when i get some ammo and can actually shoot the new toys.
