If you don't have a manual, all can suggest is take you're time and place all you're parts in the order the have come off, so you put them on the same way. Get intouch with Quaterbore to see if the have the manual you need?

Just completed that task on my 13" Sheldon lathe. I have a manual but I still took a lot of pictures during dissasembly. I probably went further than neccessary, but I removed all gears and bearings so as to snadblast the casting. I will repalce all the bearing at this time.

I just bought a Sheldon. Where do you find information on these machines? Thanks, John...

Tony Griffith's site is excellent for older lathe info. He sells manual reprints too.

Atlas is still in business. Try here: http://www.atlas-press.com/servicebulletins.htm Linking around on their home page might get you what you need.

my picture files are too big.
Private e mail me and I'll send you some Atlas 12x36 QC disassembly picts. I needed my picts the very first part reassembly! A gear had a very small lip on one side and I did not remember which side it went on....recalled pictures,,showed up great, no problems!

just complete this exercise on my atlas/craftsman. what saved me was taking a video of every stage of the dissassembly. (the last remaining allen screw that holds the housing on is under the guide plate - so take that off as a first step). Take the entire gear box off without removing any shafts.
I would strongly encourage getting the CD from quarterbore and print out the manual as this gear box is covered in the CD I got from him - it has a wealth of good diagrams to assist.
Also, when putting back together - there is a separation ring groove on the shift/lever shaft that has to go in the way it came out. Or, once the lock ring is in place, it will prevent your levers from sliding into place for thread selections. (I put it in backwards the first attempt).
The pictures before are a real help since the lock rings have to be locked into certain positions for correct gear alignment.
I sectioned off a work bench of about 3x4' and laid the parts out in exactly the order they came off, so reassembly was a reversal of the process.
took a day to dissassemble and clean, then 1/2 day to put back together and get back on the lathe.
Hope this helps. good luck.
